TX hospital admits they "harm 2 patients a day in a significant way"

In their OWN report presented by their OWN safety officer to the hospital's board of managers, the hospital admits to seriously harming 2 patients a day..and that over 70 percent of such outcomes were preventable.

It's included in the sad article about a woman who went in for knee surgery and ended up an amputee after post surgical complications were not addressed.

"We harm two patients a day in a significant way," says the report by Parkland's patient safety officer, Dr. Angelique Ramirez. It covers patients from October 2008 through December 2009 who suffered "prolongation of hospital stay, need for ICU care, permanent harm, or death."

During one three-month period, 74 percent of such outcomes were deemed "potentially preventable." They usually stemmed from failures of technical competence, infection prevention or care planning, says the report, presented to Parkland's board in February.

Parkland ranked near the bottom among peer institutions in orthopedic clinical outcomes, according to 2009-10 consortium data included in a different report to the board.

And overall, patients at the Dallas County charity hospital suffered higher than desired rates of serious hospital-acquired infections and pressure ulcers last year, according to U.S. government data cited in the 2010 incentive plan for Parkland's top executive.

5. I was one they didn't harm...a little Parkland info

parkland is where my neurologist and neurosurgeon both practice out of,as they are also a teaching hospital.The president of Parkland,Dr. Ron Anderson,is a member of Physicians for a National Health Plan.Parkland had one of the best burn units in the world,and is where JFK was taken.Parkland is also the dumping ground from every hospital in DFW-they can not refuse a patient.It is the major public hospital in Dallas.It is right across the street from the Dallas Salvation Army Homeless shelter.It has a huge outpatient health clinic system,with maternal clinics in several high schools.It has been shit upon by those who'd rather have a Bush Library and Cowboy Stadium.
I was head nurse of the Parkland MICU for 5 years.They give excellent patient care,as all the staff are committed to their work,or trust me,they wouldn't be there.

They saved my life...I was a patient in their epilepsy/neurosurgery unit 7 times.
i spent 48 hours straight in the ER with my blood clot-again,cared for by a way understaffed staff with respect.
They see roughly 40,000 patients a month there...most in crappy condition.

They need support from the community...and they are simply not getting it.

It's a totally beneficial procedure I'm having done though (nose is getting fixed) so I'm actually looking forward to it.
