GOP Blows It, Before They've Even Begun
GOP Blows It, Before They've Even Begun
by wdrath
Thu Nov 25, 2010 at 07:33:54 AM PST

Here's a letter to the editor submitted to my local newspaper today, in case anyone is interested (For those who may think it's "too early" to start holding Republicans accountable, since they haven't taken office yet, just remember: Republicans have not given Democrats any kind of a "honeymoon" after Democrats won Congress and the White House, so why should we "play nice" with filth politicians like them?)

Dear Editor:

It’s amazing how truly arrogant professional politicians are.

Just days after the American people decided to "throw the bums out" and put Republicans in control the House of Representatives, those very same Republicans began immediately to break their promises of more transparency, balancing the budget and letting the "will of the people" be done.

Within two weeks following the elections, Republicans announced the following:

a) They plan to abolish the House Office of Congressional Ethics;
they’ve even indicated that if public outrage does not allow them to abolish it outright, they plan to get rid of it by "defunding" it (talk about the ultimate, cynical dishonesty and deception). Wow. The arrogance knows no bounds.

b) After claiming they want "balanced budgets" (despite that most of these very same folks are the ones who actually gave us the worst deficits in American history), they announced that one of their top priorities will be to...spend more than $700 billion on tax cuts for the rich without paying for it.

c) Within days of being elected to the majority, Republicans announced that, of all of the priorities facing this country, one of their main goals will be to use (or is it misuse?) their newfound power to "investigate" the Obama administration, signaling a willingness to spend whatever they want on said investigations, regardless of how much they may add to the deficits they decry. So...instead of doing the will of the people, Republicans have almost immediately started out their tenure promising to...misuse their power and taxpayers’ money in a partisan vendetta instead of solving problems.

Abuse of power. Misuse of their mandate. Reneging on their campaign promises. Less than two weeks after lying their way to power. Sounds to me like the same old corrupt Republican mis-leadership that we got rid of just four short years ago.

It will be interesting to see if Ann Marie Buerkle has as little regard for the people of this district as the rest of her corrupt party leaders. Come on, Ms. Buerkle, please tell us what you think about these outrages planned by your party leadership. Your answers (or lack thereof) will be very telling.

2. We know.
They are bad people and have demonstrated this beyond any question for all to see. How they were placed back in a position of trust is something I do not understand.

3. All true but unfortunately...
the Dems have no communications system or strategy for getting these facts out to the public.

So the facts don't matter much, IMHO.

Another great post, Kpete. Keep them coming!

8. That's what I don't understand the Democratic Party
has the best and brightest Communication and advertising experts. We have the most creative and effective communication tools available.

So why the hell can't we have an effective communication arm? Two years in and the communication is still broken WTF?

Do we have to do it ourselves?

15. The problem is the media ...
The RW media control 90% of the messaging. It doesn't matter what the Dems say,
if the message hurts corporations, the message is never delivered, thus never received.

Obama campaigning for Feingold in Wisconsin, the RW media kept saying that they couldn't
get rid of the tickets and they'd be lucky if they had a couple of thousand people show
up at the campaign rally. Instead over 30K people showed up. Did anyone hear about that?

So, it doesn't really matter with the Dems say or do, if it doesn't benefit corporations,
you'll never hear about it in the main stream media.

18. Yep ...
BO takes really fun and hard hits at the GOP all the time, and it never sees the light of day ... Meanwhile, Palin friggen tweets some BS and it is deluged all over the place ...

They just cut and paste the same headlines day after day ... Dems on defense ... Rs HIT Ds ...

It's kind of hopeless now, until they get it in the minds to push back a bit for whatever reason ...

29. Just like no one saw the thousands upon thousands that protested the Bewsh wars.
"Not corporate friendly? Don't like our Republican president? Fuck you. We just won't televise it. What do ya think of that shit?"

They learned their lessons from the "Whole World is Watching" 60s. Unfortunately, the internet can only do so much, and news (even back in the 60s-70s) has pretty much always been designed to not embarrass corporations or the illegal bullshit they pull in any way. It's even worse now. No matter how effective the message is, it's never going to see the light of day because progressives own no networks.

6. "Misuse of their mandate."
what mandate, they didn't get a mandate at all. People were just seeking change that they didn't get in '08, they still don't like the GOP any better.

23. I was going to type the same thing! Not only did they not get a mandate,
speaking of being "concerned" about the deficit, these were the same people who voted against a commission to address the debt, even though it was initially their idea. They also voted against PAYGO!!

9. Excellent editorial.
Of course, mandate is a strong word. Turnout was low, and 80% of those who voted were white. What does that tell you?

It tells me that the party failed to appeal to its base, and the base stayed home. Doesn't matter how good our communications skills are, if we don't deliver for the people, we will lose.

Every time.

losers and miscreants...it's like watching a clown car plunge over into a ravine.

And voters didn't see this coming? How anyone could vote for these people amazes me to this day...:eyes:

11. It would be absurd to think they would behave any differently.
Best I can tell they promised to double down on their failed ideology and worked diligently for the past four years (ramping it up to a new level for the last two) to obstruct and undermine every effort.

I honestly wonder what in the world would indicate that the Republicans are acting in good faith, much less had in some way changed, other than to become more batshit.

14. They won't get rid of it immediately
They have to let it finish the Maxine Waters investigation first.

Then they can get rid of it before it can investigate any more Republicans.

17. All the GOP has to do is keep the country in economic ruin for 2 more years.
The voters will respond by electing a Republican president. The Kochs and the Federalists know exactly what they are doing. They don't give a damn about who controls Congress. They want another corporate friendly Republican in the White House, where all those expanded executive powers will be put to use---as they were during the Bush/Cheney years---lining the pockets of the wealthy and keeping workers down.

Compared to the money the Kochs can make with another W.---and Palin is the ultimate oil friendly Republican---control of Congress does not mean squat. The GOP's only job these next two years will be to make sure that no one gets a job, no one gets health care and everyone gets as mad as possible. How exactly have they failed this mission?

19. Too Bad The Corporate Media Pays No Heed...
They have their own agenda and that means framing everything in GOTB terms...so they never fail, it's always the Democrats fault. Who needs a stinkin' ethics committee that was all but non-existant during the DeLay reign of terror...just another "waste of taxpayers money". But that's surely not the case for Issa and his ilk to start witchhunts...in that case "the public needs to know".

The sad thing is this administration plays by these terms as well that means they'll never fail to miss an opportunity to look weak.

that never holds Repubes accountable and spews right wing propaganda. Pox News gives them the cover they need to sell the same shit, albeit a bit more subtle.

25. 'PLAN' is key here
This hasn't happened yet and there is still a month and a half from preventing this from happening....Two key questions:

What is the Democratic Congress going to do to keep this from happening....

What have they been doing for the past 1.8 years so this wouldn't happen??????

I know that the GOP is a gang of pirates - I just can't understand why the Democratic Party and the Democratic President have to go along with them....The Republicans certainly haven't and won't cooperate and sing Kum Bay Yah - where is the backbone? spine for our invertebrate political leaders?
