14. Orwell's 1984 is not exactly what people take it to be

in that it is not actually speculative fiction, but actually just a version of what Orwell saw as current life for him, in 1948, you. The man was being watched by his own government as he wrote a book about being watched by his own government. So he wasn't speculating he was extrapolating, if anything, documenting, perhaps. With flourish.
So of course he was right, he looked out the window, saw the rain, and wrote 'it is wet today'.
