What are your favorite international online newspapers and what part of the world do they cover?

You a news geek? I am. Sometimes I just can't find good reporting in American papers, especially on some foreign issues or events. It's then that I turn to online editions of foreign newspapers for some good old fashioned in-depth reporting.

Sadly, though, as the years have gone by, outside of the mishmash of articles that pop up on Google News, only Haaretz and Asia Times are my favorites above the rest.

Haaretz, Israel's oldest newspaper does an excellent job of reporting on the Middle East in general and also what remains of the tattered Israeli Left collects there to provide commentary I find heartening.

Asia Times covers not just Asia but the whole world. Some of the most in-depth articles I've ever read on complicated political issues have been there. Pepe Escobar, incredible freelance journalist, has written many pieces for them and I just noticed one of his stories from Asia Times had been posted recently, which got me to thinking about this op.

But there have to be more than that, more than just two examples of international newspapers which still dig up important stories and present them with the care the subject matter deserves.

One warning about THT though is it's got a bunch of crap you sometimes have to wade through but their core news division is tight.

The good stuff is commonly buried under cricket scores and the like, though.

For YEARS I have subscribed to the Guardian Weekly. I LOVE having a REAL paper to read with breakfast. Granted with a weekly you're not getting up to the minute "news," but you do get lots of serious analysis and good reporting on global realities and issues with the Weekly. Try going to

Also at the tail end of the "front page" of Huffingtonpost you get great links to the Independent and the Guardian. Obviously neither/none of these are hard core left wing, but they're pretty damn good. Ms Bigmack
