Local tie saves soldier's life
Noble County native Derek Davis considered himself lucky to be alive; it was only later he learned he owed his deliverance, in part, to people right here in Cambridge (Ohio).
Ambushed in Afghanistan, Davis took rifle fire from the Taliban, including a round to the chest.
Fortunately, he was wearing body armor.
"It was the plate (inside the armor) that actually stopped the bullet," said Dennis Davis, Derek's father.
That plate was manufactured in Crooksville from material produced at Federal Mogul's Cambridge plant.
Ironically enough, Dennis Davis works here at Federal Mogul where he is a millwright.
"The same stuff we make saved my boy's life," Davis said, "and I'm sure it has saved a lot of men and women over there."
