Once I know this about an actor, musician, director, etc - I'm done with them.

Fortunately, most right-wingers in the entertainment field are people I'd never have watched in the first place. Duvall was the rare exception but even so, I just can't stomach the sight of him anymore.

123. Me too, knowing a celebrity is a Republicans ruins them for me
My family thinks I'm crazy, but I can't help it.

My wife is as liberal is I am, but loves Country music - given how few Country singers are Democrats, it leaves me with little to enjoy when she's in charge of the radio.

I recently found out about Sylvester Stallone, which has made my favorite movie, Rocky, rather hard to watch anymore. I had no idea about Duvall...that hurts too.

However, I wasn't expecting to see Regis or Paula Deen on that list. Perhaps I shouldn't be regarding the latter. She did, after all, do a whole show with Jimmy and Roselyn Carter. And, I should know better than to assume that all white, middle-aged Southern women are republicans. There are actually quite a few who aren't. :-)

Most of the Miami Cuban set are deeply anti-Castro so they

And she, like everyone else on the list, is quite rich which

7. The article loses all its impact by one of the pictures.
Edited on Sat Nov-27-10 02:33 AM by RandomThoughts
The picture shown in so many places, of the guy with finger in silence position.

That is not Republican picture, nor conservative picture, nor Christian picture, but a secrecy picture. And just like their beliefs do not define them, since some people believe they are things they are not, the person that picked that picture to put it in that article does not define the people. Not saying I know what their beliefs are, but saying they probably don't completely know either.

And there are some good conservative and Republican ideas, but secrecy is for control, however the private sector does the same thing, and that is what libertarians do not recognize, or if they do, they do not mention because it benefits them.

Although my comment is mostly about the person that picked those pictures, and not about the people in them. And don't really want to comment on them when commenting on much of the entertainment they have added to culture, even if parts of their personal thoughts on society could be argued as better or worse.

Although I actually do like and think their intents are best from their perceptions and experiences. If they are wrong, not saying I would say such a thing, it would not be from intent or heart, but from thought and education. however the person that picked that picture is showing a different thought, since he is making the secrecy comment.

And to go a little deeper, it is possible that their work or what they show in their work does not match what they believe, or that they are used for an agenda that is not their agenda, nor for them. How could that be? Maybe because many Republicans want to use many workers for themselves without the workers knowing it, rules applied back. So even if a 'Republican' makes some film, it does not mean it is only seen as having the same views that they have for what a 'Republican' is.

And the same thing could be said about many Democrat ideas, since it is not a Democrat Republican thing, but about other issues.

Thats not exactly right, they are not used for something that is not their agenda, but for something that is, but that they might not understand that it is. For instance if they think some platform would accomplish what they think is best in their heart, and it is not, then what is best can also show through their films. So it is not like they are used, but what they intend can be seen even if their information is incomplete, or not supporting what they think they do. The same can be said in areas that I could support based on some bad information, and hence why supporting concepts and ideas, not something like a party label or any label makes more sense. Sorta fits knowing someones heart.

So when Mel does his freedom speech, he might think that matches Republican ideas, but it may or may not, and it may be more about other concepts, or Buffy in her quest for fighting back against bad, she might think that is something akin to a political or economic party, but the thoughts and ideas in the concepts are not about that. Such translations into party or economics is just a thought of best way to do what they think they are doing from their perspective.

Hard to explain, but you can see good heart in many things regardless of someones belief of some political or economic ideas. And there is good and bad in both economic systems and both political systems, the problem is when both parties like the bad parts more for self gain reasons.

Among many other roles, he played "Mickey" the trainer from the first few Rocky movies, and the Penguin on the old Batman TV series. Some of his best work was from the classic Twilight Zone, from which that picture was lifted.

A bitchslap for ignorance is always welcomed by me. It keeps me humble.

I'm shocked. I've never seen him as a younger man & never would have recognized him. I only think of Burgess Meredith as "Mickey". "...crap thunder and eat lightening..." I've never watched any of your listed shows. I saw one T.Z. rerun & people w/ pigfaces comes to mind, a hospital pt who sees people w pigfaces but they appear normal to each other...? I wasn't a sci-fi fan & I vaguely remember him as the Penguin. It's true you learn something new every day.

why... oh... why?????

Although... I have recognized for years that my attraction to his music is actually an attraction to the lyrics and musical production of Jim Steinman rather than so much an attraction to Meat Loaf... although I do completely enjoy the music that resulted of their partnership.

And... Shannen Doherty? Are you kidding? With all of her ups and downs I am truly surprised she has never had an "ah ha" moment of seeing the need for a social safety net. But... then again... I guess the narcissism may have won. That is probably true for Meat Loaf as well.

Obama heads to Miami Thursday evening for two Democratic fundraisers — including a cocktail reception at the
home of Gloria and Emilio Estefan that has irked some in the Cuban-American community.

"They have always said they're nonpartisan, they're neither Republicans or Democrats, and that's exactly what they
said the march would be," she said. "When this came out, a lot of people kind of felt, 'Why had they not disclosed
this before?'"

18. Among others, I'm pretty sure they overlooked
Edited on Sat Nov-27-10 03:55 AM by CakeGrrl
* Craig T. Nelson (he's reading a Reagan book in a scene from "Poltergeist" - a little inside joke?)

* Pat Boone

* Bo Derek's boyfriend John Corbett

* Gary Sinise

* Jon Cryer

* Victoria Jackson

* Angie Harmon

I'd put Victoria Jackson, Jon Voight, Robert Duvall, Pat Sajak, Chuck Norris and Sylvester Stallone past the Republican level and well into 'Bagger/Wingnut territory. There's a difference between the reasonable conservativism of Eastwood or Schwarzenegger and the "Obama's a threat to the country" rantings of the Wingnuts.

I knew about 50 Cent, and Shannen Doherty's been flaunting her Republican status since "90210". LL Cool J surprises me a little bit, but not much.

95. She's actively shilled for the Repugs in some political ads.
Not to say that an actor's roles are in some way related to their politics, but with the obvious exception of "Good Advice", she typically plays unsympathetic law-and-order (no pun intended) types, and even in Good Advice she came off as a person who has little time for the messy gray area between "right" and "wrong". I always got the impression from her that she feels more comfortable in a world of binary good/evil character. Honestly, that is Republicanism at its base.

Personally, I was sort of amazed she didn't make the list.

She was also lauded for her stint on "Law and Order" as the more conservative foil to Sam Waterston's liberal D.A.

20. How about a category for celebrity admirers of Ayn Rand
I'll bet this bunch likes to call themselves "fiscally conservative, socially liberal", which sounds so much nicer than "fuck the poor".

They include:

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt
Christian Ricci
Vince Vaughn
Rob Lowe
Eva Mendez
Jerry Lewis

Dependent on beneficent beings such as themselves for whatever charity they care to bestow.

Jolie had supposedly complained during the presidential campaign that Obama was "all about welfare and handouts". She went on record saying she was considering voting for McCain.

You may disagree, but I don't think it's possible for someone to admire Ayn Rand and not be a right-leaning asshole in their heart of hearts. And these two admired her enough to try to get a movie of Atlas Shrugged made with Jolie as Dagney Taggert. Barf.

Anyone that doubts that Ayn Rand doesn't have a place in intellectual discourse, or in fact, that objectivism isn't worthy of intellectual criticism and challenge would be a fool.

Note that Rand, like many philosophers, merely develops the philosophical construction. That people find value in it to the point of practice is specifically on those individuals. Karl Marx developed the framework for Communism, Engels the pamphleteering for it, but it a guy like Lenin to stage a revolution based upon it.

Now, let's be clear, I find "modern" philosophers such as Rand to be fishing the remnants of a barren pond. Objectivism draws some interesting points, but fails in its final conclusions by carefully and purposefully ignoring (and occasionally vilifying) human costs, as if they were impediments to drawing the conclusions they are attempting. Indeed, if human costs to implementation of objectivism were seriously considered and given the proper weight that they (IMHO) deserve, it would be difficult, if not impossible to draw the conclusions that Rand ultimately draws and it would be difficult to embrace its implementation as the Republicans over the last 30-40 years have.

However, that doesn't mean that the entire body of work can be dismissed as drek.

Christina Ricci says of The Fountainhead... "I relate to it because of the idea that you're not a bad person if you don't love everyone." Well, yes, I can certainly get behind that idea. It's simple and speaks a truth that I think MOST people could relate to. On face, however, that you find a particular idea or ideas relevant and a particular piece of literature engaging does not indicate a wholesale endorsement of an entire political philosophy. It doesn't mean that it is contraindicated either.

Fiscally conservative, socially liberal. Hmm? I don't get where this is a bad thing. If we were more fiscally conservative (i.e. balanced budgets, elimination of spending waste, proper funding for programs, elimination of pork and earmarks, proper regulation of markets/banking to prevent "bubbles") we wouldn't be in this economic mess and if we were more socially liberal, the LBGT community would already have its rights validated through national legislation, draconian drug laws would be off the books, etc. If anything, we suffer under Republican policies because they are actually fiscally spendthrift and socially regressive (and this doesn't even make it a sufficient opposite, rather something entirely different). Maybe our definitions require alignment which might account for a misunderstanding here.

111. Um...
As literature, her work can most certainly be dismissed as dreck. I was shocked at how bad it is, given it's popularity. As Dorothy Parker once said of Atlas Shrugged, "This is not a book to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force".

Her garbage "philosophy" is nothing more than a sick paean to pure greed, unworthy of "intellectual discourse". Not without good reason has she become a virtual deity to every scumbag on Wall St. sucking the wealth out of middle America. Knowing what I know of Rand, I suspect what Christina Ricci actually meant by her comment is that Rand gave her permission to not give two shits about the suffering of other people without any of that pesky guilt. I guess Christina thought that was real neat because what fun is it to have to think about those losers?

"Fiscally conservative, socially liberal" seems to be the new rallying cry for libertarian-types who don't care for nanny laws but at the same time are horrified at the thought that their tax dollars might - gasp - actually help some needy person. But Rand gives these assholes a junk philosophy that allows them to feel self-righteous and honorable even as they carry on full steam with their mean, selfish and petty little lives.

128. Fiscal Conservativism?
Really? You've bought into that tripe.

The fiscal conservatives are fraudulent and have been since before the First World War. They resist social spending, claiming budget balancing as their goal, but they then pursue major other forms of gov't spending. (In the last 30 years, this means defense.)

A large percentage of them equate fiscal conservatism with low taxes, when in fact, being a fiscal conservative should ALWAYS include both expenditures and revenues. And, if the cuts can't be made fast enough to prevent a deficit, then taxes need to be raised. You'll seldom hear any of those promote that, because they're really not about balancing budgets if it takes balancing it on the back of everyone equally. They just want to cut spending which has disproportionately taken a toll on lower income people.

The whole fiscal conservative/social liberal meme seems attractive, but it doesn't work in practice and its proponents have never actually walked their walk.

...compare it to what has been done in its name, and then claim that the idea is the result.

Come on.

The "fiscal conservatives" as they like to call themselves have never been fiscally conservative, so can we please for once in our pathetic lives treat the idea as meaningful even if there are those who wrap something completely dissimilar in the words?

I thought we were smarter than this.

What you propose here is that an ethic of fiscal conservatism CAN'T work because the thing prancing about as Fiscal Conservatism the Meme (TM) doesn't work. Well of course it doesn't fucking work. It ISN'T fiscal conservatism. Christ, Republican co-opting of good ideas, polluting them, and turning them into catchy little memes for their own benefit really is such a pernicious infection that apparently even bright people aren't immune.

Do you see anything incipiently wrong with balancing budgets?
Do you see anything incipiently wrong with cutting wasteful spending?
Do you see anything incipiently wrong with lowering/raising taxes in response to program funding needs rather than as an election year gambit?

No? Then you might be a fiscal conservative.

The supporting characters are much more talented and interesting than kelsy grammer was. When he's on the screen the show slows down to a crawl. Hs on screen brother (David Hyde Pierce) provided the emotional connections and the empathy. The grammer character seemed to bounce aimlessly between brother, therapist, and father.

grammer was lucky, he had good writers and a good cast. has he ever done anything else?

144. FYI.
Cuban-Americans, particularly those who still self-identify as Batista supporters, are frequently Republican. Overwhelmingly so, the closer you get to the wealthy suburbs of Miami.

They view Democrats as weak on Communism, blame Kennedy still for not doing more to expel Castro, and most of the hard-line supporters of Batista were/are devoutly Catholic, further most of the first-wave (made up the very-wealthiest Cubans) fled Cuba with as much of their wealth as they could horde and/or hide. They tend to lean left slightly on non-moral (ie. not abortion, gays, etc.) social issues, but vote GOP for anti-communist and fiscal reasons. We were beginning to see some softening of this from the mid-1980s on, but that reversed course and immediately solidified again in the aftermath of the Elian Gonzalez mess under Clinton. (They blame Clinton and Reno.)

Estefan is more moderate than most, but I've known for years that she was factually slightly center-right in her political beliefs. (She's also a bit more intellectual than people give her credit for...she's on record as being an avid reader to the exclusion of most other pastimes.) By many objective measurements, the Obama administration is also slightly-center-right and generally in the exact same ways.

Arlo Guthrie: "I became a registered Republican about five or six years ago because to have a successful democracy you have to have at least two parties, and one of them was failing miserably. We had enough good Democrats. We needed a few more good Republicans. We needed a loyal opposition."

That defines 'independence' for a LOT of wealthy folks of all persuasions. The lower classes are
seem more likely to interpret their desire for independence from government as a need for class empowerment and lifestyle (values).

And that is exactly the excuse given by Dennis Miller in his recent interview with Tavis Smiley.
Holding onto earnings (fewer or no taxes) and a foreign policy of "kick ass" aggression were the two main issues for him. He said he could care less about the birther issues, etc.

But I really hesitate to even enter this argument as we all know the greed factor has no distinct party lines unless you accept bad vs. worse as an acceptable distinction.

Edited on Sat Nov-27-10 01:40 PM by CreekDog
he's been twittering and it's included jokes about Obama being Kenyan and/or Muslim.

ironically, Baio has mocked Obama for being stupid. :eyes:

about a year ago, people (possibly DUers ;) ) were tweeting Scott Baio and seemed to really get under his skin. i think he got locked out of his account and created a new one and then was taunted that they didn't believe it was really Baio doing the tweeting.

so he posted a photo with his name to prove it was him. "Scott Bato".

then of course, the crew made fun of him for not being able to spell his own name. he got mad and while the photo stayed up, he moaned that the person who made it was not available to fix it (it was a piece of cardboard written on with magic marker).

then we made fun of him by saying his cousin (who was in "Soap") was way more awesome than he ever was. someone created a twitter for Jimmy Baio who would take shots at Baio. then Baio blocked a whole lot of people and made his tweets private for a time.

then he went back to showing pictures of Michelle Obama and comparing her to...I would try to explain but let's just say he's a db of the highest order.

104. and his dear friend, James Lileks
The guy who did The Gallery of Regrettable Food and other stuff, which was funny, and which I can no longer enjoy. Ultra conservative douchebag.

Ever since hearing about Nelson, which was a huge blow because I'm such an MST3K fan, I've wondered about Joel and the rest. HOPEFULLY it's just Mike Nelson. Joel always seemed like such a kind and gentle person -- I suspected maybe religious, but surely not reactionary? Oh hell, who knows....

109. Joel is the opposite of Mike Politically.
As is most of the rest of the Best Brains people.

Servo and Crow (Both of them) are solidly liberal as far as I know. :)

105. To his credit his views never seemed to creep into MST3K
I still watch it religiously, and he's very funny (no Joel, mind you). I've known about his political views for quite awhile and not once has it interfered with my enjoyment of the show.

And for those who also want to watch it religiously. 24/7 MST3K!

Mike is Very, VERY Good at hiding who he is. If he had not come out publicly, most of us would have never known.

It's a bit of a struggle for me, but I am still able to enjoy old episodes of MST3K and separate.

Servo (Kevin Murphy) and Crow (Tom Corbet) and the Original Crow (Trace Beaulieu) are Thankfully 180 degrees opposite of Mike Politically.

I also support RiffTrax which is a very good Continuation of the MST3K genre.

For Joel Fans, him and a lot of the other Best Brains people are now doing a similar thing called Cinematic Titanic. You should check it out if you get the chance. :)

Thanks for the link!

There are very few things that are better than 24/7 MST3K.

110. Cinematic Titanic may be even better, and I don't say that lightly.
Just the few things I've seen have left me in stitches. I was just watching some last night and I was literally falling out of my chair in laughter. Imagine MST3K uncut. So great to see all of them together doing that stuff. :)

I like Mike a lot on the show. Like I said, his beliefs don't creep into the jokes, and he did a lot of really great stuff. I hate to give any Repub credit for anything, but he's still damn funny to me. Time to watch Diabolik!!!! :)

They are coming to Mesa, AZ in March--that would be the perfect Xmas gift for my sister who is going through chemo right now! Something to look forward to would be wonderful and I know whe'll love it.

113. no shit
I read his book of essays - I think it was called Mind Over Matters or something like that - and I had NO CLUE. It was very funny, to be honest. Dang, such a shame because I just can't get past his politics, now that I'm aware of it.

At least I can still enjoy all the Joel episodes (which are better anyway!) Thanks for the link!

129. KNEW there was a reason I liked Joel better than Mike.
Democratic comedians and performers have far better deliveries than Republican ones do. With Mike as the lead guy, the show became less animated, less fun and just BLAH. Nothing.

149. Honestly Hugh, I think Trace leaving had more to do with it than just Mike's ineptness.
Edited on Sun Nov-28-10 07:24 PM by TheWatcher
Although I completely agree with your point about Democratic Comedians, Mike did provide some pretty fun moments, but he just wasn't able to carry things the way Joel did.

And when Trace (Dr. Forrester and the Original Crow), and Frank left, the show never was able to regain it's original charm, and I think that's a big reason why it was less animated and fun. Mary Jo and the gang did an admirable job as foils to Mike and the bots, but you can't replace someone like Trace. He was every bit as much heart and soul of the show as Joel was.

Besides, Joel was a genius. Mike is a good writer, but he isn't Joel and never could be, thus further vindicating your point about Democratic Comedians. :)

As much as I despise his politics, I can't blame the shows decline solely on Mike.

You should read the interview where he comes out though.

It's scary.

He's like a sleeper cell you never find out about until it's too late.

VERY good at hiding who he really is.

84. oh gosh, people ... not all rank and file Republicans are evil.
For instance, i have a friend, now a liberal, who kept his Republican registration for two reasons:
1) he's too lazy to change it
2) he gets great pleasure out of voting for the worst possible candidates during primaries.

How about we gauge non-politicians by their actions, and not party affiliation, eh?

Frankly I never cared about an actor's political affilation nor is surprising that people who make millions of dollars would be republican.

I can like a movie some one has been in and still think their politics or even their person sucs

I love Ben Stein in Ferris Beuller. Still think he's an a-hole and an idiot.
