7. I Just Heard Of More Lay-Offs...

The industry I was in has been destroyed by a combination of corporate gluttony and the destruction of the consumer economy. This has led some companies into bankruptcy and others still underwater with large debts to pay. Revenues are up this year compared to last year but that's like saying instead of your team losing 100 games, it only lost 95. Maybe the creditors are buying this but I doubt it. Instead I'm hearing of new "cuts" as early as the middle of December and surely throughout the first quarter. Lately there hasn't been a week that goes by where I haven't heard of or from an acquaintance about losing their job.

This recession/depression is far from over. The credit time bomb continues to tick for many...either the lack of getting it or the prospect of getting revolved into bankruptcy or worse. I do see some positive things on the horizon, but that's not anywhere near where we are now.

I do voiceovers in english for companies here n Asia. Promotional videos and such. So, obviously they are marketing to western markets. The last four months, my work has increased by four times as much. So, there must be a pick up in the market.

I am not a solid waste hauler. I saw the economy picking up at around July 2009. Some everyday people, ie, not Wall Streeters, of multinational CEOs, are doing fine. One constant that I see is the amount and type of education that a person has. Creativity also is a factor, a person can have any type and amount of education, but if they are creative thinkers, they can launch great businesses and money generating opportunities. There are just so many opportunities out there right now, from cost efficiently feeding needy people, to communications, to energy, to the environment.

21. yup. it turned into a depression some time ago

In order to dig my way out of the recession, I took on de...er, invested in myself, and went back to school for a new degree, in Med Lab technology. With 100% employment rate and worldwide shortage, it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Now I'm approaching my final semester -- unpaid, 40 hours/week in hospital clinical training.

Only suddenly the hospitals are taking half the students they used to. Oh, and they're laying off. There aren't any jobs at the back end.

My little boat is scheduled to sink next summer when I graduate and can't find work, unless I can dig enough clams or worms to support my family and pay off my student loans.

10 years ago it was standing room only in my doctors office. Had people waiting outside the office in the lobby waiting for a chair. Now when I go there its usually me and one or two other people sitting in the waiting room at the most.

. . . mostly utility related . . . now its the water bill which shot way up in the summer. I do see spending picking up around here a bit. Maybe the season, but I remember less activity last two years, probably due to the government transitions. We're all feeding off of each others' ability to spend around here, I think, from the stores and technical jobs to the service industry and state and government workers - health and safety workers too - boosted by stimulus funds and whatever optimism we can muster.

But, I lost my job earlier this year... for three months I busted ass to get a new one before my visa ran out. managed to pull that off, then all the people I met while looking for a new job started contacting me to do freelance work on top of my regular job. So, last week I paid off the last of the money I owe from being unemployed and have a nice junk of change in the bank, in fact more than I've ever had before in my life at age 31. So, I'm okay. As a "greedy" SSDI recipient I'm up to my eyeballs in recession. Everywhere I turn prices are going up - gas, food, Medigap premium, utilities - and I'm stuck in 2008 as far as my benifits are concerned. The COLA calculations are a big bad joke.

in fact, this year was worse than last. Over the last 2.5 years we have experienced a 70% drop in our income, and there is nothing to indicate that things are going to improve.

I have no work lined up until the 2nd half of Feb., and even that is not a signed contract. We will probably need to borrow money from relatives (again) to get through this winter.
