Are you 'flexisexual'?
Are you 'flexisexual'?

It all started when Madonna kissed Britney Spears on stage, followed by Katy Perry who sang a song about a girl she kissed – and now it seems the 'flexisexuality' trend is fast catching up.

The new word has been coined for the growing number of straight women who flirt with bisexuality. It refers to people who have a sexual preference but refuse to be bound by it.

"Women are often more open to these experiences when they reach their 40s and are more confident with their sexuality. If an opportunity presents itself they may think "why not", particularly if they have come out of a long relationship," the Daily Mail quoted Psychologist Dr Cecelia D'Felice as saying.

Twice-married Barrymore, who has admitted having flings with women, has been quoted as saying, "Being with a woman is like exploring your own body, but through someone else."

Actress Lindsay Lohan, 24, is among younger flexisexuals who see it as 'on trend'.

1. I'm not, but I welcome the "trend"
I may be biased in that I think women kissing (and etc) other women is hot.

Yes, I'm a pig.

14. I think that's very common, actually.
I'm of the mind that sexual orientation is a continuum, and while most lean one way or the other, I think it's normal for situations to arise that bring about new experiences. Provided we haven't limited ourselves with preconceived notions, of course.

15. I have always found it interesting that --
this is a "trend" primarily amoung women. I also find it interesting that this "trend" coincides with a love of girl on girl onscreen action by Hollywood, and brought to us primarily by male directors.

How much of it is a genuine expression of sexuality and how much of it is soley about "trend"?

20. I'm guessing it has very little to do with sexuality as a personal characteristic, and
everything to do with following trends, being 'edgy,' and getting noticed. Whether it's celebrities, or the girls at the college party...

27. Now this is a "trend" I can get into.
I can see HHNF's point--what gets most of the media attention as a "HOT NEW TREND" is girls kissing girls--because men like to watch that.

For those of us women who like to see men kissing just as much...well, there's gay porn. And 'Queer As Folk.' And 'Torchwood.'

But even as strong as my prurient motives for wanting men to be as touchy-gropy-kissy with each other as women sometimes are, it's more the fact that as someone who's known I had some degree of bisexuality all my life, I want the CONTINUUM of orientation to be more respected and better understood.

The more leery responses (including mine) tend to reduce experimental sexuality as a performance for someone else's benefit...and that's fine, if that's your kink--I am all in favor of exhibitionists and voyeurs finding each other in a mutually-beneficial, consensual way. But it's far from the be-all/end-all of what orientation or even "flexibility" is really about.

24. Reminds me of the 70s, when being bisexual was very au courant
I do like the more modern term "heteroflexible." though. I have this thing that "real" bisexuals can be in love with someone of either gender. "Heteroflexible" is more accurate in describing people who typically are in love only with the opposite gender, but are willing to be open-minded given the right circumstances.

21. No, I don't think this is what is meant at all
As someone who can identify, allow me to attempt to explain--at least from my own perspective. I am someone who considers herself "mostly straight". I am hetero, for me sexual pleasure (from another person) is all about the penis. I have been with other women, but it is not sexually gratifying to me (I love the penis). Yet I love women and often have serious girl crushes. I love the attention of women--they just lack the freaking penis. I sometimes would make out with a woman or have sex with a woman, but I really don't consider myself bi because gratification from another person for me is about the penis.

Whatever, don't fence me in.

22. Bringing up Katy Perry and Britney Spears doesn't help.
Two girls kissing in a bar to turn on college boys isn't an orientation. It's a desperate cry for attention.
