This was a the note that my Grandmother wrote on a piece of paper. She folded it, and placed it inside a hankie, along with a few pieces of hard candy.
She put the hankie in a pocket of an overcoat my grandfather never liked much (he thought it was too fancy). That coat was part of a clothing drive post-WWII.
My mother & her younger brother also wrote short notes & put them in pockets of things they chose to donate. My aunt put a wallet with $2.00 US in it.
This story has long been told in our family, although all the participants have died.
To my knowledge, no one ever got a reply, but that was not why they sent the notes along with the stuff.
Their priest suggested that all the parishioners do this, as a gesture of friendship...after a long time of animus.
Watching CNN's "heroes" show reminded me of this..and also made me sad to think of all the money wasted on bombs, planes, warships, missiles, etc. What wonderful things could be done with even half that money.
Those gifts post-war were small, and not many ever knew who the recipients were, but they were all gifts given freely..and in the spirit of helping someone, somewhere.
It's equally sad, when individuals extend the hand of friendship, only to have our militaristic adventurers lop it off, as they "spread peace" .
We apparently no longer want the downtrodden to come "here", but we seem to be unable to help people make their lives "where they are", even remotely bearable. People who hate where they are, look for other places to go and when they are constantly beaten back or made to feel unwelcome anywhere in the world, is it hard to understand why many of them lash out randomly?
