The War in Afghanistan is Not about Afghanistan

by Harvey Wasserman

The war in Afghanistan is about perpetual war, not Afghanistan.

It's about preventing democracy in the United States, not bringing it to Southwest Asia.

And it is the tombstone of the Obama Presidency.

To justify the fight, they've rounded up the usual suspects: Terror. Oil. Minerals. Poppies. Democracy.

..............

More than 50% of taxpayer money goes to weaponry. We have troops in more than 100 countries. We spend more on our military than all the rest of the world combined. Throughout history---Athens, Rome, Persia---empires have spent themselves to military oblivion. We have now been in Afghanistan longer than the USSR.

3. Actually the wars are about economics
As Naomi Klein reminds us the Muslim countries are the only places where the robber barons and their banks cannot invade with the IMF so 'shock and awe' was the means used. Sharia law has protected them from Western looting. It's always about money.

It would make some sense if President Obama started the war and hadn't announced that withdrawal will begin next summer.

The notion that this is "the tombstone of the Obama Presidency" is ridiculous. As if anyone who became/becomes President wouldn't have had to deal with the realities of Afgahnistan. It also completely ignores that he ran on adding more troops.

10. K&R. Which leaves the same question we ask time and again, why?
Are they stupid? I don't think so.

Are they so arrogant that they think they can control/manipulate the outcome to their ends? Maybe.

Is this part of something else?
