United States & South Korea Playing with Fire Regardless of an international appeal to maintain calm, the United States and South Korea have scheduled another joint military drill for this weekend.
~snip~
The North Korean government has said that it would regard the military drill, which will involve the deployment of the George Washington U.S. aircraft carrier, as an action against North Korea that could prompt a military confrontation.
Tensions rose earlier this week in the Yellow Sea when Pyongyang fired some rockets near the Yeonpyeong Island in retaliation.
This incident led to the dismissal of the South Korean Defense Minister due to strong criticism by the most belligerent sectors of the opposition and the government, saying that he showed weakness in reacting to the crisis.
The present situation is working to the advantage of South Korea’s President Lee Myung-bak, who’s been meaning to raise the military budget for 2011, and reinforcing its military presence in the region bordering North Korea.
