NYC Teacher Caught Up in Spanish Curse Debate
Coño is a common Spanish idiomatic expression and is understood as slang for the female genitalia, the vulva.

NEW YORK (AP) — It can be tossed off almost harmlessly like "damn" or dropped like an F-bomb.

Now, a public high school teacher is suing the city after he was suspended and fined $15,000 after being accused of deploying the word "cono" (KOHN'-yoh) in his Manhattan classroom. School officials view the word as inappropriate for the classroom and accuse Carlos Garcia of misconduct.

But the city attorney agrees with the hearing officer's decision to suspend and fine him.

New York is home to thousands of immigrants from across Latin America and the Caribbean. What's considered profanity among one ethnic is can be everyday slang in another.

1. It actually translated to the 'c' word

The one John McCain used on his wife. At least where I lived. I've heard it used in movies from Spain too, as a cuss word.

2. If the Spanish speaking community want full involvement
and consideration in society, they need to play by the same rules.

I remember when Howard Stern was getting pulverized by the FCC a few years back, and in the same time slot in New York was a Spanish speaking morning show that used the dirtiest words ever on a regular basis. They were never censured or even talked about....because it was in Spanish.

4. There's a store here in Miami "Nooo gue barato" (It's a truncated cono)

"What can you say about a store that is called "Nooooo!! Que Barato" and for those who don't know what NOOOO means its not no as in ney, its part of a swear word. Kind of like saying "Sh**!!!! Thats cheap" yup that would be the name of the store."

My ultra-liberal Cuban ex-girlfriend used "cono" "cono carajo" and the truncated "no" regularly. It's certainly not the classiest word, but I don't see a reason for uproar. Besides, learning the curse words of a foreign language is the best part!
