Report: Comcast Outage Cripples Internet Access Across Northeast Corridor
Source: Mediaite.com

BreakingNews is reporting that a flurry of Twitter activity is suggesting a wide-range outing of Internet access throughout the Northeast corridor of the United States, simultaneously ruining the evenings of Sarah Palin obsessed bloggers and Fantasy Football participants. Fortunately, Mediaite has advice for out of pocket Comcast users (who, hopefully, are accessing this site via smart phone.)

The twitter feed ComcastCares appears to confirm the outage:

4. So too big to fail only applies to banks that deal in false papers.
The more these mergers are allowed to happen the more danger they present to America's security. It's not rocket science. Who says that a foreign investor buys one of these megacompanies and decides to turn off the switch? It's not ridiculous to think along these lines it's absolutely critical.

5. The DNS server was down in..
Vermont. Took me a little while to figure out it was Comcast's problem and not mine. I was fooled because my Vonage still had access to the internet. Either they don't use DNS in their services or they use their own DNS server. Well it's back up now (obviously or I wouldn't be leaving this message).

7. My sister called me on Skype from New Hampshire.
Skype was working perfectly while they had no other internet access. Weird.

9. Appears to be back up. After-action report here:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-20023949-93.html

Comcast spokesman Charlie Douglas told CNET through e-mail that last night Comcast engineers identified a server issue that affected Internet service for customers primarily in the Boston and D.C./Beltway areas.

Though the outage focused on Boston and Washington, D.C., a Comcast customer service technician reportedly told NBC News that there were "significant Internet outages" in Connecticut, Maryland, Virginia, Massachusetts, New York, and New Hampshire, according to MSNBC.com.

Douglas told CNET that Internet service was impacted for a few hours last night before being restored. He added that Internet access is working properly this morning, but Comcast engineers are carefully monitoring the service. Douglas added that Comcast apologizes to customers affected by the outage.

The problem seemed to center on Comcast's DNS servers, which handle the conversion between IP addresses and their domain names. Several Comcast users on Twitter said they were able to regain Internet access after replacing the entries on their PCs for Comcast's DNS servers with those of the DNS servers offered by Google or OpenDNS.

10. And here I thought it was our WiFi
We were cleaning out our family room yesterday in preparation for our new flooring, and I thought that our wifi had become disconnected. However, hubby was able to connect to his work site, so we didn't know what was going on until they mentioned it on the news.
