Turkish PM 'hates' Israel: US cables

AFP - Turkey's Islamist-rooted prime minister "simply hates Israel" on religious grounds, US cables released by WikiLeaks say, reflecting growing US misgivings over Ankara's foreign policy.

The scathing assessment comes in a memo on a conversation with Israeli ambassador to Turkey, Gabby Levy, about Recep Tayyip Erdogan's frequent outbursts against Israel following the Jewish state's devastating war on the Gaza Strip last year.

"Our discussions with contacts both inside and outside of the Turkish government... tend to confirm Levy's thesis that Erdogan simply hates Israel," the cable said

1. There's an Islamic leader who doesn't?

Isn't it a given that in the Islamic world the leaders will express great displeasure with Israel?

I'm not suggesting their criticisms are not valid, either. Certainly, some of them are.

Knowing that the Turkish PM hates Israel on religious grounds is like finding out George Bush hated Saddam because W's daddy didn't take Saddam out: not news, and commonly known.

2. True, but Turkey makes a very big deal of being a secular state

it's even pushing to join the EU. This doesn't help much.
