Willie Nelson Calls For National 'Teapot Party' After Arrest
CANNABIS CULTURE - Country music and pot community icon Willie Nelson has responded to his Friday arrest in Texas for marijuana possession by calling for the creation of a National "Teapot Party" to legalize marijuana.

In an email to popular pot website CelebStoner, the well-known singer wrote, "There's the Tea Party. How about the Teapot Party? Our motto: We lean a little to the left."

"Tax it, regulate it and legalize it," Nelson continued. "And stop the border wars over drugs. Why should the drug lords make all the money? Thousands of lives will be saved."

Nelson was arrested at a US Border Patrol checkpoint in Sierra Blanca, Texas on the morning of Friday, November 26 when officers found six ounces of marijuana on his tour bus. Border guards said they smelled the strong odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle and ordered a search. Nelson claimed the pot was his and was arrested with three others.

There is a great interview with Willie at link-

Perhaps then, you should choose another site if this one isn't to your liking.

180. First things first. You didn't ask ME a question. It was I that asked........
........you to define me libertarian and a liberal/progressive which you half answered. Nelson IS NOT a libertarian as he supported Nader AND Kucinich. Tell me an "Austin libertarian" who would support one much less both of them. I too call myself a FDR/LBJ Democrat being for the working class ideals such as unions, civil rights, a strong national defense (but not empire and hundreds of "bases" overseas), no government in ones personal business (libertarians are for that) and most of the "peripheral" liberal ideas too. I got pissed because you said Nelson was a libertarian, which he is not. This is obvious by the shit he is involved in and his freely expressed views. Liberals and libertarians views intersect mainly when it comes to government getting involved in your personal liberties, ie marijuana use. I like this site just fucking fine, thank you. Maybe you ought to look up the definitions of liberal & libertarian in a fucking dictionary.

116. been there done that
Held one of the first libertarian caucus meetings in my state in my living room. Studied hard went right back to the Democratic party.
This is a pretty cool move on Willie's part , almost as cool as when he sent whiskey and bandannas to the Democratic legislators holed up in Oklahoma who'd fled Republican extralegal legislative maneuvering in the Texas legislature .
During the controversial mid-decade 2003 Texas redistricting attempt by Republicans in the Texas Legislature, Nelson supported the quorum-busting "Killer Ds," Democrats who left the state and briefly stayed at a Holiday Inn in Ardmore, Oklahoma to prevent the Texas House of Representatives from considering the legislation.<21> Nelson sent the legislators a case of red bandannas, T-shirts, and a case of whiskey with a note that read "Stand your ground." According to Time, "The Dems then broke into a campfire-style sing-along of Merle Haggard's 'Okie from Muskogee' from a second-floor balcony...At a press briefing that evening, legislator Jim McReynolds said, "We have not heard from Governor (Rick) Perry or Speaker (Tom) Craddick, but we have heard from the most powerful Texan of all, Willie Nelson."

152. So and this means?
that willie is a dem or a libertarian?

just because he supported the Dems in their fight against redistricting, doesn't mean for a wit that he's suddenly no longer a libertarian.

I'm a Texan and had lived through that complete travesty of government.

While willie maybe a libertarian, doesn't mean he's a repuke. And as any thinking person would come to understand that the redistricting was unconstitutional. Just because a person is a libertarian doesn't always equate to one being a halfwit.

He like anyone else back then, who actually paid attention, knew what was going on and realized that it wasn't only a Democratic Party issue.

Conservative on business (no taxes, free to do whatever they want), conservative on government (no services, fend for yourself), and liberal on social issues (gays, pot smokers, an open immigration policy, and abortion are all OK with them).

I'll concede that they're better than Republicans on social issues, but they're far worse on everything else. It's a mistake to think of them as any kind of political ally. Libertarians want a complete abolishment of all social programs, ranging from Welfare and Social Security, to your local schools and public libraries.

93. I think it's a bit of a stretch to say that
Gays and abortion are okay with them. Although their party platform appears to be "okay with gays and abortion", statements made by various libertarians appear contrary to that point.

Libertarians are nothing more than pot smoking repukes. period.

While they may spout a number of "appealing talking points" to their mouth breathing masses, they get down right medieval when pushed to clearly define their positions.

Like Communism, they appear to work just fine on paper. In practice, not so much.

98. The Libertarian position is "No government regulation"
Individual Libertarians may not like gays, or abortion, but their political stance is fairly consistent...they want no laws governing those things. They may think that gays are going to hell, and that abortion is murder, but they also believe that it's not the states job to limit the rights of gays, or to ban medical procedures of any kind.

As one Libertarian once put it to me: "Gay marriage shouldn't be a political issue, because the government shouldn't be involved in marriage at all. It should be between you and your pastor."

Libertarianism is governmental minimalism, consistently and across the board.

150. Well, like any half witted party...
it looks great on paper, but in reality, it fails.

Many people love to interpret libertarianism as being best buddies with the john birch society, when in fact, although they are related, are quite separate.

However, in todays political climate, much as the republican party has been essentially taken over by the religious right, the libertarian party has been basically taken over by the birchers.

So while we would like to debate the merits of libertarianism as it appears in its original form, that would be the equivalent of debating Marx's communism against what was actually practiced by stalin.

I've seen him a few times in concert and have seen him make statements aligning him with libertarians.

However, like I said many times, that doesn't make him unreasonable.

he gives to Dennis and supports the environment. Anyone tired of geoge w. moron's* stupitidy would have given to anyone other than a repuke (2008 showed us as much) and would have also tried to support a viable candidate.

and his position on the environment is nothing new. that's old news.

    perhaps he's liberal leaning libertarian.

But his history regarding his taxes and why he didn't pay them were stances he took 20 years ago. Perhaps with time, he finally saw a bit of reason and is understanding that government regulations and taxes are the entry fee for a civilization.

BTW, I've seen him in concert a good dozen time since the '70s, and I've never heard him say anything that would indicate he's a libertarian.

BTW, he also endorsed Claire McCaskill for Senate in 2006. Yet another Dem supported by Willie Nelson.

It appears as if you have a problem with me saying that he's not unreasonable?

That you can't find it in yourself that perhaps he's just not the democratic hero you want him to be?

the man is a musician. He sings really great songs.

    he supports great causes.

    That's really noble of him.

and to act as devils advocate, you infer by him supporting the puppy mills ban that libertarians are against that. That's weird. Only dems can support cute little puppies?

And on the other link, any thinking person would support the vets health care. You have to remember something, this is Texas; Football and the military go hand in hand and you don't dis either if you want to walk out of a bar alive. What is your point? Supporting the vets transcends political parties.

You can give me link after link. And I show that they are all gray areas of political support.

Frankly, if you don't want to believe me. I don't care.

in the end, does it really matter?

    176. as I stated in another reply...
I worked with him back in 2000. He stated to me that he was a libertarian then.

Maybe he changed. That's always possible.

I never said the man was unreasonable.

Last time I spoke to him was 2003. No politics came up per say, but it appeared as if nothing change in him politically.

I haven't had the chance to work with him since then, so anything can happen. And yes, I was aware of him playing at the convention, one of my buddies played back up.

He saw something in the dems in 2008, like we all did and still do, but that doesn't mean he is a Dem. It just means he supported them as many fallen out of grace republicans did as well.

    65. Willie should move to one of the legal states. Then we can nuke Texas from orbit. Its the only way

    to be sure.

I really don't think Willie would leave Texas and its good that we have people like him in the South to stand up to the fundies and neocons.

Willie is 77 years old... he could probably go to the doctor and get a scrip for whatever substance he wanted, provided it was one that makes money for Big Rx. Thats the thing these "moral panics" so ass-backwards, is that there are far worse things you can get legally.

For example, concerned citizens are clamoring to ban Four Loko, but I can go to the cut rate and get caffiene pills and grain alcohol.

According to the "moral majority," it must just be the HFCS and artificial flavoring that makes this stuff date rape in a can:

    85. Doesn't the desperate insistance

    89. no.
Incredible that someone in the U.S. would try to make the claim that people who support the right of adults to make decisions for themselves indicates addiction.

This is a really repulsive argument - you are basically saying that anyone (whether they use a substance or not) who supports freedom is an addict.

The founders of this nation would have a word for someone with that sort of logic: tyrant.

I hope you don't drive a car, or use public transportation or ever ride in gas-powered vehicle, in fact. Those things pollute the environment far worse than any cigarette smoker ever will. But you like your gas-fueled vehicle so you don't care about that, most likely.

Which makes people who make these sorts of statements the most rank hypocrites around.

Here's one for you: How many Iraqi children did your govt. kill so that you could drive your car?

Honestly, the holier-than-thou bullshit brigade in this nation makes me want to puke.

#1 - Marijuana is NOT addictive. Look it up.

#2 - Nobody is talking about smoking pot in public places - we just want to be free from harassment by police and free to choose another substance other than alcohol.

#3 - Most liberals I know are not for making cigarettes illegal, just making it so others don't have to inhale their second hand smoke if they don't want to. Look it up.

#4 - It smells awesome. I have never had any weed that smells like "cow dung" - some mushrooms yeah sure but not weed. :P

#5 - Why do you hide your profile info?

#6 - If YOU don't want to smoke pot nobody is stopping you - but you damn sure don't have the right to try and stop me. Keep your prejudices to yourself please.

    144. If you knew anything about many of the people who post here
you would know that your impression is wrong.

there are a lot of posts that talk about the way the drug laws disproportionately target minorities and poor people.

Willie Nelson, however, is an international public figure with a following across the political spectrum. If he were to use his fame to organize a counter-assault on the war on drugs - that would be a good thing for all - including minorities and the poor.

If you cannot understand how and why this is a good thing - well, that's too bad.

Nelson appeared and recorded with Snoop Dog, btw - because both are public figures/advocates for cannabis reform. I know Snoop is just a privileged black guy, but it's important for those in positions of public exposure to stand up for reforms.

Every major change that has occurred in American life happened because people in positions of privilege with public platforms used their positions to also advocate for change. The same was true for major revolutions - Lafayette in France, Franklin in America, MLK in the 1960s... so it's not just useless but counter to reform to gripe about someone with privilege who advocates for change when those very people become the catalysts for change that improve the lives of everyone.
