U.S. must embrace morality to rebound, rising GOP star says

Returning America to prosperity doesn’t just mean a major shift in fiscal, tax, regulatory and energy policy, it also will require a return to traditional family values and organized religion, U.S. Rep. Mike Pence, R-Indiana, told members of the Detroit Economic Club today.
“Our present crisis isn’t merely political or economic, it’s moral in nature,” Pence said. “It’s the realization that people in positions of authority have walked away from the timeless truths of honesty and integrity. We’ve got to get back to basics.”
Pence is one of about a dozen names that have surfaced as a possible presidential candidate in 2012. He’s spent the last two years as the chairman of the Republican conference committee, the third ranking position among the GOP in Congress.
But he has announced that he’s stepping down from that post next year, fueling speculation that he might be seeking higher office.
A staunch social conservative, Pence was the winner of a presidential straw poll at the Values Voter summit in September, followed by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former U.S. Rep. Newt Gingrich and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
