Chris Matthews Just Called Julian Assange A Rapist
Edited on Mon Nov-29-10 07:37 PM by no limit
When talking about the wikileaks documents Matthews made the comment "what a guy this is, raping women, he's a rapist!". He didn't mention that the accusations against him "lacked substance" (Im quoting Swedish authorities) and that the warrent which was issued was quickly withdrawn because there was a lack of evidance and lack of credability in the accusations.

Our media really does a bang up job, you would think this type of shit would have some kind of consequences. But if such consequences existed Matthews would be out of the job for all the blow jobs that he performed for the Bush administration in the lead up to the Iraq war.

On edit: after he said it he did look at his producers and quickly added in "alleged rapist". Because alleged rapist is obviously much more flattering.

10. If you don't like the message attack the messenger
Up until now, I've been sort of neutral in the whole Wikileaks hoohah, but if Assange gets a dirtbag like Matthews into such a hissy fit, he is probably doing the right thing.

In fact, lately I gauge most of my opinions on matters of public policy and politics by discovering who is for certain positions.

If tweety is for it, I oppose it, and vice versa. He's not the only one, either, but he is representative of the thinking of the beltway journalistic clique.

he was very pro-bush for a long time. i try and stay away from Hardball cause IMO Matthews is part of the problem, not the solution.

12. So what's new?
Folks on DU do that all the time. No need for investigations, presumption of innocence, trial, silly things like that, but only when the person is someone who is on the "Most Hated" list or is a member of a disfavored group.

34. I imagine libel/slander laws matter more when talking about American citizens
Edited on Tue Nov-30-10 12:59 AM by RZM
Maybe they matter as much for non-citizens under the law as well. Perhaps they do, but Assange probably won't be presenting himself in a US court anytime soon over this.

14. Mathews is starting to piss me off
He's so off base. You're right, he did kiss Bush's arse in the lead up to the Iraq war.

If I remember right, he was one who was saying that to say anything against the war was unpatriotic and it made you a traitor.

Now he's saying that because the military is sacrificing over there to protect our freedoms, we should sacrifice our civil rights as far as the TSA goes.

He really is a stupid man.

can still be detained for questioning. So the jury is still out.

21. Not at all, but it's not accurate to say that the warrant was thrown out
because the evidence was not credible. Obviously, some authorities still feel there is a need to investigate further.

22. But that's what happened, the warrant was thrown out, within a matter of hours.
Some authorities may be feeling the need to invesitage further and want to question him, that is fine, thats what they probably should do. But as far as I understand they are investigating sexual misconduct, not rape. Nor is he is not under arrest. The bottom line is that to call him a rapist is downright slander, and obviously Matthews knew that since he quickly walked it back in a the form of a denial nondenial.

33. They are attempting to question him in a suspected rape, not misconduct.
The active warrant seeks his arrest and extradition for suspected rape, sexual molestation and unlawful coercion.

36. You need to take it one step further though
And bring your accusation into a sovereign legal system. Then you can say that. I have no information on the accusations against Assange that isn't available to you or anyone else. Given the powerful enemies he's made, I'm pretty skeptical about them and I wouldn't be surprised that if the accusations are bogus, they were planted precisely so you can say 'alleged rapist' when mentioning his name. But I don't know that for sure, at least not yet.

35. Seriously people
There is at least one thread a week talking about some dumb-ass statement made by Matthews, all of us just need to stop watching the show. Its not that we disagree with him ideologically, its that hes really, really fucking stupid but thinks hes like this old-time professional journalist who asks really hard-hitting questions but just doesn't get that he is seen as a joke by almost everyone. Its really sad in a lot of ways which is why I try to just ignore him instead of getting pissed about it.
