How do you get a federal job?
I have applied to many and can't seem to get a bite. Have worked mostly in finance at the management level. There seems to be plenty of jobs that I qualify for, but never hear any response to my applications. Hoping some existing federal workers can relay stories on how they got their jobs, and tips on how I can get one. Thanks!

3. i have a sister who works at teh IRS. i took a test once a long time ago
to try for a job. i believe i was offered temporary tax time job of some sort but never took it. i believe if you do very well on that test you can get a great job at least at the IRS. not sure how else you can get into the fed jobs.

4. Contact an incoming Republican Conngressman!
Tell them you love Ronald Reagan and think that Barack Obama is a secret Muslin, and that you have extensive knowledge of oil and gas fields in Kazakhstan.

It helps if you've attended Liberty University.

It helps even more if you wear a nice suit and Gucci shoes and are capable of sucking the chrome off a trailer ball. The latter skill will really come in handy. New Congressional pages are much in demand these days.

That should do the trick, if you know what I'm sayin, Ginto. ;)

8. I think Customs is hiring
heard an advertisement on the radio a month or so ago.

Of course, I live near the Canadian boarder so maybe it is only in my area that they need help.

Good luck to you

10. I'm a bit disappointed. Thought I'd get more insight from actual federal employees.
Guess it just goes to prove how diffcult it is.

11. they must be keeping it secret
BTW, it was the Boarder Patrol that had a radio ad running in the Detroit Mi. area a month or so ago, not Customs.

12. I think it's a who you know type of thing like so many things in life.
Unfortunately, I have to be in an office and can't do anything too physical. Auto-immune stuff.

14. Are you saying that progressives do not hold federal jobs?
I think its a mixture. We've all seen what holdovers from the Bush administration can do when they're left in power so I think people of all political stripes hold federal jobs. It just seems like a club that is very difficult to get into.

18. How on earth did you get that from my post? I've tried to get a Federal job too--
haven't succeeded yet, but I don't figure the answer to my problem is on DU.

Last time I tried, I made it to the last interview and I won't give up now.

15. Get A National Security Clearance
The best Fed jobs require you to have a national security clearance.

16. Now this is what I'm looking for.
How do you do that? My friend and his wife got their top secret clearance by being in the military and they have amazing jobs. The military is an option that is not open to me though.

20. FBI background check--but the jobs that require them specify that you
do this in the job posting. I don't know if you can request one for yourself and you must pay out of your own pocket. The good thing is that you only go through it once unless you apply for a job that requires a higher clearance.
