Exclusive: WikiLeaks Will Unveil Major Bank Scandal
Source: Forbes

First WikiLeaks spilled the guts of government. Next up: The private sector, starting with one major American bank.

In an exclusive interview earlier this month, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange told Forbes that his whistleblower site will release tens of thousands of documents from a major U.S. financial firm in early 2011. Assange wouldn’t say exactly what date, what bank, or what documents, but he compared the coming release to the emails that emerged in the Enron trial, a comprehensive look at a corporation’s bad behavior.

“It will give a true and representative insight into how banks behave at the executive level in a way that will stimulate investigations and reforms, I presume,” he told me.

67. I hope Assange is smart enough to have secreted the documents
somewhere that they'll come out no matter what.

I am so sick of the evil, evil people who run this country. I hope they get their just desserts.

115. ever heard of the "insurance" file?
Also, wikileaks twittered for people to download the last set of files prior to release -- and one day prior to the denial of service attack.

Anything happens to Assange, and the encryption key gets sent to various holders of the file(s). They've probably got them distributed all over hell by now. :D

141. Yes, of course I know about the insurance file. I was referring to the bank docs
set to come out after the first of the year. I was thinking the insurance file has some entirely different information.

It's about time that the criminal behavior of those who claim to "represent" us  is brought to light, and I don't care who or what gets caught in the net.

60. Agree 1000%. In a related topic, how sad is our media?
This one individual is able to get a million highly sensitive documents and our current media acts as if they are impodent on any topic that is newsworthy. If this is not a clear indictment on how our media is either 100% ineffective or chosing to avoid prosecuting those in power, I don't know what is.

saw to it that cocaine flooded the folks in the ghetto.

His journalism won him awards, then he was pushed out of journalism by the very paper that had hired him, then quite a few years later, he died, either from suicide or from someone with a vendetta.

Webb was about the only remarkable journalist I can think of in this Country. Robert Fisk of Great Britain holds my respect, but he is not from here.

Bank of America. As a former top executive, I am a witness of its wrong-doings. Some that I reported and some that others reported but never any action was taken other than federal investigators drinking coolaid with BofA Attorneys. You would never imagine that a Bank within USA could be so corrupt and intensely dangerous, if I tell you, that it encouraged its own employees to commit suicide by haunting them, daily interrogations and many more worst crimes, including orchestrating burgularies (getting its confidential material back) etc.

Bank of America May Be WikiLeaks Target: Forbes 12:49
Bank of America may be target of WikeLeaks’ “megaleak” regarding major U.S. bank, Forbes says, citing ComputerWorld interview w/ WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange from Oct. 2009.

Assange: “At the moment, for example, we are sitting on 5 gigabytes from Bank of America, one of the executive’s hard drives. Now how do we present that? It’s a difficult problem.”

Assange: “We could just dump it all into one giant Zip file, but we know for a fact that has limited impact. To have impact, it needs to be easy for people to dive in and search it and get something out of it”

Forbes notes there is no clear confirmation upcoming “megaleak” will focus on BAC
WikiLeaks, BAC haven’t immediately responded to Forbes
NOTE: Forbes writer Andy Greenberg reported yesterday WikiLeaks will unveil major bank scandal in early 2011, citing comments by Assange

Julian Assange talked about BofA last year in an interview with Computer World, claiming "he had acquired a large cache of information from Bank of America."

He specified that he has 5GB of material on the company. From one of the top exec's computers.

tho I do wish he would not wait so long to release the info.

BOA is down to 10.00 from a high of over 45.00 couple of years ago.

more quotes form the long interview

So do you have very high impact corporate stuff to release then?
Yes, but maybe not as high impact…I mean, it could take down a bank or two.

These megaleaks, as you call them that, we haven’t seen any of those from the private sector.
No, not at the same scale for the military.
Will we?
Yes. We have one related to a bank coming up, that’s a megaleak. It’s not as big a scale as the Iraq material, but it’s either tens or hundreds of thousands of documents depending on how you define it.
Is it a U.S. bank?
Yes, it’s a U.S. bank.
One that still exists?
Yes, a big U.S. bank.
The biggest U.S. bank?
When will it happen?
Early next year. I won’t say more.

10. from page 8

this is the end of the interview

But there are also industries that just have more secrecy, so you must know there are things you want that you haven’t gotten.

That’s right. Within the intelligence industry is one example. They have a higher level of secrecy. And that’s also true of the banking industry.

Other industries that are extremely well paid, say Goldman Sachs, might have higher incentives not to lose their jobs.

So it’s only the obvious things that we want: Things concerning intelligence and war, and mass financial fraud. Because they affect so many people so severely.

And they’re harder leaks to get.

Intelligence particularly, because the penalties are so severe. Although very few people have been caught, it’s worth noting. The penalties may be severe, but nearly everyone gets away with it.

To keep people in control, you only need to make them scared. The CIA is not scared as an institution of people leaking. It’s scared that people will know that people are leaking and getting away with it. If that happens, the management loses control.

And WikiLeaks has the opposite strategy?

That’s right. It’s summed up by the phrase “courage is contagious.” If you demonstrate that individuals can leak something and go on to live a good life, it’s tremendously incentivizing to people.

1. Travel in any private airplane or small aircraft.

2. Stay alone in a hotel room.

3. Walk down a side walk in front of anyone with a very pointy umbrella.

4. Have drinks in a hotel bar in London without carrying a Geiger Counter.

I pray that he has copies of the information scattered about so that taking his life or disappearing him will not stop the release of these documents.

Julian Assange is a very brave hero. However, I fear for his life.

127. He has better. He has uploaded security with encrypted info that will be unlocked

....if they come after him...

He just told everyone to download the files again.

He knows they are going to hit hard.

And, I think he is very aware that he might end up imprisoned, tortured, or killed. But, he is very smart. Brilliant.

62. Hmm... Why did the LBN thread get locked? As for Assange, I wonder where he's keeping his...
documents in safety to be released if he were to be somehow "ended".

That's the typical way many whistle blowers protect themselves from being outed.

But that would imply that he would have some sort of safety deposit box in a bank to do this. But if he's attacking the banks and hasn't specified which one he's going after, I wonder what each of them are doing with any safety deposit boxes he might have?

I was thinking that keeping an open threat like this through the holidays was insurance for him to not get outed, but one wonders what the banks will do to "cover it up" if he's outing one of them. Perhaps each one will check to see if he's got a safety deposit box with them to see if they might be "safe". On the other hand, perhaps he's playing games with them and putting safety deposit boxes in with each one of them. Then he can check at the time he announces which bank he's targeting who's "messed" with his box as a signal that he should go after them next!

96. I'm fairly certain he has sense enough that any safe deposit boxes he may have are not traceable...
to him. However, I suspect he has layers of insurance. #1, I expect the key to the insurance file will be released publicly on the internet if any ill fate should befall him. I also expect he has many surrogates with flash drives all over the world.

They would be well advised to leave him alone.

Of course, the public is largely, if not entirely, impotent to challenge them even when they know the truth. But is it not you who are being presumptuous, particularly given the rolling economic cataclysm we face? We are living "in interesting times" - hence the cranking up of the panoply of a police state.

113. The tapes exposing Enron's screwing of Granny did have an impact.
That impact was the precise reason Gray Davis was taken down and the Governator was installed. One of his 1st priorities was dropping the $9 billion lawsuit CA had against Enron.

It also probably helped convict Ken Lay who, as you may recall, conveniently 'died' before he had to go to prison.

I see where Holder has revealed we are investigating Wall Street for criminal charges. I'd think they'd be happy for the help.
