NJ must pay $271M for killing tunnel project, FTA says

TRENTON — New Jersey owes the federal government more than $271 million after canceling a rail tunnel connecting the state with New York, according to a debt notice obtained Monday by The Associated Press.

The letter from the Federal Transit Administration's chief financial officer to NJ Transit's executive director demands payment of $271,101,291 by Dec. 24.

It's money the government wants New Jersey to repay for work done on the Hudson River tunnel before Republican Gov. Chris Christie terminated the project. The notification follows a warning letter earlier this month estimating the charges.

"FTA demands payment in full within 30 days from the date of this letter, hereinafter referred to as the 'delinquency date,"' the letter states. The letter was dated Nov. 24.

The dumbass tried to make this tunnel his "Bridge to Nowhere" moment except this wasn't in Alaska connecting it to a sparsely populated island but connecting New Jersey to one NYC, two very populous areas.

How soon is the recall starting in NJ?

1. Frankly I'm wondering how Christie got into office in the first place,
And what was he thinking when he canceled this. I love how members of his administration are hinting that they might not pay a thing, apparently he wants to take his state on to a collision course with the Feds.

Get rid of this idiot before he completely destroys New Jersey.

2. That makes $671 million down the tubes because of Christie...
His vaunted Education Commissioner lost $400 million in education funding from the Feds due to negligence.

5. We'll have to get the Taft White House bathtub out of storage...
Edited on Tue Nov-30-10 09:34 AM by rfranklin
William Howard Taft was the largest of all the presidents, tipping the scales at over 330 pounds. He got stuck in the White House bathtub and it took four men to remove him. After that incident, a new oversized bathtub was installed that was 7 feet long and 3.5 feet wide.

6. And he 'canceled' 55,000 jobs for NJ residents along with it. But he cut taxes for the rich in NJ.
So, his 'base' is thrilled.

7. Recall? People love him....
Seriously. Other than teachers and state workers, people love him. He demonizes those "other" groups so successfully and pins problems on them.

And whether we like it or not he plays tough and rough and backs up his (idiotic) views and positions with aggressive offense rather than defense. And that convinces people to respect him at the very least (something our prominent Democrats would do wise to learn)

It's horrible but it's true. I can't believe that with all the stuff he's pulled people still approve of him more than they do not.

And with this thing he'll simply refuse to pay it and people will view that as a tough guy move that they will respect. Ridiculous.

8. The recall can start as of today.
But we need a couple of good, large organizations (like the NJEA and a few other unions) to co-ordinate the signature gathering effort since we need nearly 2 million signatures.

11. This is only the beginning for voters who voted for these idiots
The Republicans always go for dramatic affect and short term gains but fail to look at the big picture and any results from their decisions.

So I wonder where Christi is going to get the $271 Million. From the poor I suspect, he will probably also cut police, firefighters and public health workers. That's where the Republicans always start. The results crime will go up, response time to fires and accidents will be greatly delayed etc and so it goes. Just wait because it's coming.....

12. $271 million loss versus a $5 billion overrun
He made the right decision for New Jersey.

If NY companies want to hire people from NJ, we have plenty of office space in NJ for them.

Or NYC and state can chip in a few billion.
