Long Island Rep. Steve Israel has the monumental task of trying to win back control of the House of Representatives for Democrats.

Outgoing Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced this evening the House Democratic Caucus chose Israel to serve as chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the party’s election arm for House candidates.

“Congressman Israel has demonstrated extraordinary capabilities in recruiting candidates, in attracting resources, and in communicating core Democratic values for middle class and working families,” Pelosi said. “In his new role as DCCC chairman, his practical experience in running and winning in difficult districts will provide critical leadership for Democrats to regain the majority in 2012.”

Israel takes over for Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), who presided over the DCCC during the GOP’s landslide victories in this year’s midterm elections
