Passengers can bring guns on Amtrak starting in December
After a decade-long ban, Amtrak passengers will be allowed to bring unloaded guns on most trains starting in December, The Sacramento Bee reports.

The policy, which takes effect Dec. 15, allows passengers to bring guns aboard trains that have checked baggage service. Unloaded firearms must be packed in hard-sided containers and will be stored in train lockers, the newspaper reports.

In addition, gun owners must inform Amtrak officials 24 hours ahead of departure.

The change, ordered by Congress, brings Amtrak's firearms policy in line with air travel rules that permit unloaded guns to be stored in locked baggage holds, the paper says.

and the mentality that the second amendment is somehow limitless is breathintakingly uninformed.

17. Has the practice then applied to airlines proved problematic?
What is it about it that gives you pause?

Do you just not like guns, or is there something concrete?

unloaded firearms which are stored in a hard-sided container and locked away in a train locker?

Even if you believe that modern firearms occasionally shoot all by themselves, these firearms are unloaded.

Actually, when I think about it, I'll change my "juvenile offensive comment" to:

"Wolf! Wolf! Wolf!"

obviously from Aesop's "The Boy Who Cried Wolf"

50. Why, because I'm not afraid to be a passenger in a train ...
or an aircraft that has unloaded firearms locked away in a train locker or a baggage compartment?

If that makes me brave to you, your standards are set unusually low.

As I type this I am sitting two feet from a loaded S&W Model 940 9 mm revolver that's in a locked gun box. Even this risky behavior doesn't make me a hero or a "man among men". It merely means that I am familiar with firearms and not terrified by them. I have transported handguns on an aircraft in the past. They, of course, traveled in the cargo compartment. No big deal.

19. you fly with an unloaded gun for use at your destination, not the airport
I used to have to fly with mine and it became simpler to just ship them ahead of time to wherever I was going (naughty naughty) or buy them there.

Or wait, is that not what this means? Darn...

Sounds like a perfectly sensible rule change to me - people should be able to safely transport legal property on public transportation. Not sure what the 24-hour part is about, perhaps to make sure that a baggage car is scheduled to be on all segments of the itinerary?

The delicate flowers in a tizzy about this have forgotten:

1. You can already do this on airplanes, and have been able to for years.

2. Amtrak allowed this for the first thirty years of its existence. I don't recall any train hijackings
during that time.
