mom recently found them, and wondering if there is still any value or if there is even money in the bank.

The bank, called First National Bank of Skokie. (Skokie, IL) It no longer exists. We assume it was consumed by a larger bank.

The CoD's were made in 1979, 1980 and 1981.

We need to find out if there is anyone/anything we can do to determine its value.

Dad made 14 "phone tags" trying to get information.

Maybe if I tapped into a few DU resources, I'd get some help finding out.

Can you?

2. Check your State's treasury department. They have a unclaimed money department.
The cash will be there. HTH.

4. Look for escheated funds with your state!
Find the website for your state controller's office! When the owner of funds cannot be located, the state gets them and holds them and draws interest (I'm pretty sure) and you have to jump through a few hoops to get the money.

I found over $5k for my boss this way!

15. This is the correct answer.
Whatever happened to the issuing bank, the funds are now in the state treasury.

8. Crisco, kosher salt & paper towels????
Or well that's what I was taught. I heat up a dollop of Crisco (it's the only reason I keep it in the house), add some kosher salt to the melted fat and use paper towels to "scrub" it clean.

17. That's what I do too!
I had to toss the Crisco recently... went rancid! EW! My cast iron skillet and griddle are both wonderfully seasoned now. Nothing sticks. I can't even burn things on anymore. It took about five years, but it's well worth the effort! My skillet (a big one) works every bit as well as my Le Creuset cookware, for a very small fraction of the cost. The cast iron will absolutely, without question, outlive the Le Creuset pieces, and the Calphalon as well. Plus, you get the added benefit of an iron supplement!

The Niles Centre State Bank, founded in 1907, wove its way through the Roaring 20s, the Great Depression, World War II, and in the 1950s was known as the First National Bank of Skokie. It did not become the NBD Skokie Bank until 1987. With clearly the longest heritage of any financial institution in the village, it also lays claim to being the largest exclusively in Skokie with assets today in excess of $400 million. It employs more than 175 people, and is headquartered at 8001 Lincoln Avenue.

and

NBD Bancorp, Inc.

NBD Bancorp, Inc. is the largest bank holding company in Michigan and the 18th largest such concern in the United States, with assets reaching $43 billion as of June 1994. The company's early success was built on commercial banking, particularly with the state's major automakers and their suppliers. In the 1980s, however, the company set a goal of expanding its consumer loan business and began a program of acquiring banks in other states, including Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio, as well as establishing the NBD Trust Company of Florida.

...

Principal Subsidiaries: NBD Bank; NBD Bank, Canada; NBD Bank, FSB; National Bank of Detroit-Dearborn; NBD Brokerage Services, Inc.; NBD Community Development Corporation; NBD Financial Services of Michigan, Inc.; NBD Insurance Company; NBD Leasing, Inc.; NBD Mortgage Company; NBD Real Estate Services, Inc.; NBD Securities, Inc.; Charter Oak Insurance Agency of Michigan, Inc.; Corporate Funding, Inc.; NBD Equipment Finance, Inc.; NBD Equity Corp.; NBD Transportation Company; NBD Illinois, Inc.; NBD Indiana, Inc.; NBD Bank (Wheaton, Illinois); NBD Skokie Bank, N.A.; NBD Bank (Elkhart, Indiana); NBD Bank, N.A.; NBD Bank (Columbus, Ohio).

and

Banking's latest merger wave gained strength Wednesday as two big Midwest banks, First Chicago Corp. and Detroit-based NBD Bancorp Inc., announced the second-largest union in U.S. banking history. The $5.3-billion deal would create the nation's seventh-largest bank-holding company, with assets of $120 billion. The new company is expected to be called First Chicago NBD Corp. and would clearly be the dominant banker in Illinois, Michigan and Indiana.

and

Bank One was created in 1998, when Bank One of Ohio purchased First Chicago NBD (itself a recent combination of First Chicago Corp. and NBD Bancorp). These two large banking companies had themselves been created through the merger of many banks.

and finally...

Bank One Corporation was the sixth-largest bank in the United States. It traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the stock symbol ONE. The company merged with JPMorgan Chase & Co. on July 1, 2004.

14. So the money's gone, then (joke)
After the penalties for early withdrawal are deducted, as well as the "look up" fee, the teller fee, the book fee, the cough fee and the donut fee, you could wind up owing Chase very little if the certificates were substantial enough in the first place.

16. You may also want to check with your State's Division of Escheat.
Most states have a law which requires long-dormant deposits to be deposited with the State, where they can be claimed. Try the State of Illinois to see if they have these funds.
