TV evangelist: I'm being extorted over affair
TV evangelist: I'm being extorted over affair
By RACHEL ZOLL, AP Religion Writer
Tuesday, November 30, 2010

(11-30) 10:45 PST New York, NY (AP) --

A prominent televangelist says three people tried to extort millions of dollars from him to stay quiet about an affair he had with a woman several years ago.

Marcus Lamb made the comments Tuesday during a special broadcast on the DayStar Television Network. He and his wife Joni founded the global Christian network, which is based in Dallas.

The Lambs said they had been keeping their troubles private so they could heal their marriage, but are going public now because they would rather risk humiliation than give in to extortion.

DayStar features some of the highest-profile evangelists in the world, including Joel Osteen, T.D. Jakes and Benny Hinn.

11. That's a good way to foil a blackmailer
You come clean about whatever you're being blackmailed about. I have no idea what the focus of Mr. Lamb's ministry is, so it seems unfair to judge him (not that it should stop any of the usual mindless religion bashing at DU, and it won't) based on an affair that apparently happened several years ago. This might actually make him more effective as a minister and a counselor, lending credibility should he tell people that they can get through bad times.

17. I'm still perplexed why people still give these shysters money.
At this point I'm kind of leaning towards "they deserve to be swindled" while still reticent about the fact that these funds keep these people on the air...

21. Because these hucksters are pros and
so many of our population are easy targets-especially the poor, who are their main targets. With the breakdown of community, family and social networks especially among the elderly these vermin prey on their loneliness and isolation. Go to any elderly high rise and you will find many acolytes who just want to belong yo something and feel useful. The poor are easy marks because its just like buying a ticket on the prosperity gospel train. It hasn't changed much since Reverend Ike perfected his radio hitch and Oral Roberts a glitzier version. It's all about once you are accepted in the club you will be prosperous. It is actually based on mainstream Calvinism and is found in some degree in nearly all Christian sects.
