Couple beat Calif. crossing guard in front of kids

LOS ANGELES -- A man and woman are accused of beating a California school crossing guard while astonished kids looked on.

Investigators say the 59-year-old crossing guard was helping about 20 children across the street in the unincorporated Florence area of south Los Angeles Monday when she tried to stop a sport utility vehicle turning into the intersection.

A sheriff's captain says the crossing guard told the driver to stop, but he and a woman got out, beat the guard and then took off with her stop sign and whistle.

Deputies arrested 27-year-old Jose Hernandez and 20-year-old Vanessa Del Pilar Martinez. Officials did not know if the couple had been arraigned but they were being held in jail.
