Continuing my slow road to the poor house, feeling very exploited.

So I have a job opportunity. It's part time, no benefits, and requires a BA at the minimum.

I figure after taxes I'll be getting less than $400 a week, continuing my slow road to the poor house. .

The job itself is one where given the description, I'd expect to make a decent wage:
curriculum development, teaching, giving professional development to teachers, supervising interns and volunteers, giving lectures.

The job seems like it would be fun and challenging. Just the sort of thing I have been looking for.

But this is 2010 in NYC, where educators are being marginalized. So a job that would normally lead to a decent life would leave me impovershed.

I know some people might say "stop whining and get to work". But when you wind up every week with less money than you started even though you just pay for the basics, can you even call it work? I think it is more like being played.

The problem is that things are getting desperate. So if offered, i'll probably take it. I know I'm not the only one in this situation. And I know that there are many others in worst. I know people mostly don't have any patience with rants these days.

But I gotta tell you, this just sucks!

I tell every young person I know... Don't get a degree in education!

If you want to teach, you are better off getting a business degree and applying to a fellows program.
At least then, when you have had enough or the school administration deems you too troublesome or expensive, you can get into another career.

Sorry kiddo but I take home less than half that and live pretty well. My pension from 22 years of employment from the State of Florida is less than $400.00 a month plus what I make at a restaurant I work att brings in a little over $700.00. At least you will be working, meeting people, networking, and staying sharp.

My pension from 22 years of employment from the State of Florida is less than $400.00 a month plus what I make at a restaurant I work att brings in a little over $700.00. At least you will be working, meeting people, networking, and staying sharp.
