Blogging the WikiLeaks, For Thursday, Day 12
Greg Mitchell
December 9, 2010

As I've done for the 12 days, god help me, I will be updating news & views on all things WikiLeaks all day. All times added at top are ET. For more follow me at Twitter. Read about my latest book here.

5:40 Assange attorney, after meeting with him for one hour only, says Assange wishes to defend himself against charges he is directing or applauding hacking: "It is absolutely false. He did not make any such instruction, and indeed he sees that as a deliberate attempt to conflate hacking organisations WikiLeaks, which is not a hacking organisation. It is a news organisation and a publisher."

5:30 My old friend Dan Ellsberg tweets that he will be on Colbert show tonight defending Assange and Manning.

5:05 New report: Assange to be transferred to new unit at prison and gain some internet access (the world quakes in fear) but not his own laptop. Story includes my favorite line of the day: "Assange complained about the daytime TV...." Wonder if Assange already has a tattoo, is writing poetry and getting marriage proposals from new pen pals.

4:40 The Guardian's daily late-afternoon WIki cable report includes big piece on witnesses claiming North Koreans helping Burmese maybe get nuclear bomb and build missile sites. Evidence seems to be thin--let's hope NYT doesn't put at top of front-page like previous debunked North Korea to Iran missile story.

3. (for wikileaks and the u.s.a.!)... :)
(for wikileaks and the u.s.a.!)...

in a land where a country's high leaders lay claim...
united states people stand feeling close pain...
their ears hear those big shots come up with excuses...
but a quick look around soon reveals where the truth is!...

from vacant lot store fronts to more soldiers' graves...
home planted sale signs hide mailbox names!...
college loan paybacks tack federal debt...
while industrial workers learn of layoffs they'll get!...

from stress-filled environments to lone chilly rooms...
paycheck to paycheck can't face future doom!...
already our seniors and jobless and ill...
view less options left with so few dollar bills!...

this is our country folks!... see for yourselves!...
the majority are us and most everyone else!...
struggling with hardships under all those in charge!...
as governmental misbehavior runs rampant at large!...

why is it our leaders dislike these truths shown?...
is it not we the people who deserve rights to know?!...
when did government's first duty become serving the government?!...
and not justly the people for whom they were sent!...

how can leaders say 'patriot' means being patriotic to them?...
when they won't play by the rules a constitution defends!...
instead it is them who lack the patriotism...
to stop their own underhand tactics which bring further bad things!...

and how can leaders use terrorism as an overall reason?...
to keep their own bully methods hidden somewhere in secret?!...
they intimidate unfairly to sway public opinion...
and steer clear of truth needed to fix dilemmas we're in!...

this is our country folks!... see for yourselves!...
the majority are us and most everyone else!...
struggling with hardships under all those in charge!...
as governmental misbehavior runs rampant at large!...

how can government's deception be the best way to rule?...
when that curve of its wrist bends most fair and square tools!...
hence without accountability it'll feed a free-for-all!...
as our country's representatives wheel and deal above the law!...

it's no surprise that the government abhors wikileaks!...
truth might hinder the officials soon from doing as they please!...
and make it more difficult to reassure u.s. citizens...
not to fret government's business and leave it all up to them!...

but we must tend to our nation and future well-being!...
to end unjust procedures and the policies we're seeing!...
they insist we believe in things proven untrue!...
now we need these disclosures to help build anew!...

this is our country folks!... see for yourselves!...
the majority are us and most everyone else!...
struggling with hardships under all those in charge!...
as governmental misbehavior runs rampant at large!...

support wikileaks!... http://wikileaks.ch

the best of wishes'n'ways'n'todays to bring fair'n'square and care!... :)

7. Can we say anonymous leak sites are the new normal?
Like high-grade encryption, anonymous proxies, TOR routing, and various other things?

10. Latest entries-
10:35 Glenn Greenwald hits TIME magazine for halfhearted correction after he pointed out errors. "In reality, the "correction" is nothing of the sort; it is instead a monument to the corrupted premise at the heart of American journalism."

10:10 Good McClatchy summary: WikiLeak cables reveal extensive US military role in Muslim world - far more than officially acknowledged.

10:00 Rep. Ron Paul on the floor of the House backing WikiLeaks and Assange. Also raises issue of -- if so heinous why no one going after NYT? Attacks "lies" that got us into Iraq and the U.S. war "empire."

9:50 The MasterCard site is down AGAIN, The Guardian just reported: "The attack was due to begin at 2pm and within five minutes MasterCard's site was down. Note again that this solely affects the company's corporate website – not the millions of payments being processed through its customers' cards. Anonymous are doing it because they can. The group is digital strong-arming and will no doubt get a bit of short-term satisfaction from it."

8:50 As always, start your day with the excellent and five-hours-ahead blog at The Guardian. Right now with news on Moneybookers site taken down by Anonymous, Pfizer in trouble over cables, pro-Wiki protests, Glenn Beck's rant, a tough column vs. some liberals who are hitting those rape accusations, a Chinese media unit joins Russia in proposing Assange for Nobel Peace Prize, and more.

8:30 ABC News reports that Assange and attorneys now preparing for expected U.S. espionage charges -- one lawyer, Jennifer Robinson, calls this "imminent" -- and extradition attempt. "He is being held in solitary confinement with restricted access to a phone and his lawyers, Robinson said. "This means he is under significant surveillance but also means he has more restrictive conditions than other prisoners," she said. "Considering the circumstances he was incredibly positive and upbeat."

8:10 As we predicted, leading Pakistani newspapers today apologizing for carry fully false stories yesterday on fully fake WikiLeaks cables.

8:00 NYT confirms Reuters story from yesterday about rumored next big WikiLeaks release -- on Guantanamo detainees, with Assange holding files on all 800 prisoners from awhile back. "After a Reuters article reported that WikiLeaks has the files of every Guantánamo detainee, a government official told The Times that the government believed the claim was correct and that it referred to a set of nearly 800 detainee 'threat assessment' files compiled by the Pentagon during the Bush administration."

From last night:

Dan Ellsberg debates Colbert on show, very truncated and Colbert closes with seemingly serious claim that U.S. "won" war in iraq..... James Rainey of L.A. Times on why WikiLeakers are not quite Rosa Parks, plus this advice: "Leaker-people, make your business about the leaks, not your leader." ... We reported earlier mystery of that Wiki-related e-book suddenly disappearing from Amazon. Turns out author himself pulled it, not Amazon.... Wired: Military bans thumb drives, disks, threatens court martials, to stop leaks....

11. Dan Ellsberg re-visits Democracy Now!
10:55 Fresh from Colbert appearance, Dan Ellsberg re-visits Democracy Now!, continues to defend Assange and Manning.

Pentagon Whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg: Julian Assange is Not a Terrorist

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange will remain in a London prison until a British court takes up a Swedish request for extradition for questioning on sexual crime allegations. An international group of former intelligence officers and ex-government officials have released a statement in support of Assange. We speak to one of the signatories, Daniel Ellsberg, the famous whistleblower who leaked the Pentagon Papers about the Vietnam War in 1971. "If I released the Pentagon Papers today, the same rhetoric and calls would be made about me," Ellsberg says. "I would be called not only a trader—which I was then, which was false and slanderous—but I would called a terrorist. … Bradley Manning and Julian Assange are no more of a terrorist than I am."
