37. Christina's World
When I was a kid, my grandparents had a Christina's World print hanging on the stairway leading up to the 2nd floor where all of the bedrooms were. It scared the hell out of me when I was a kid -- I used to literally run past it going up and down the stairs. That, to me, is powerful art when it can have that kind of effect on someone. I really wondered later what it was that scared me so -- it was at a very visceral level. I'm with you -- I grew to really appreciate it as an adult and find much of his work haunting. It no longer scares me but many of his paintings still have a really visceral, haunting effect on me.

39. The loneliness in his works is just stunning...he does it so effortlessly.
"Blue Door" is haunting because of its isolation, the dilapidation around it, the wonderful diagonal sunlight...what a great work it is...

10. No, I can't, but here are some lame guesses:
1. Coast of the Mediterranian, Post-impressionist painter.

2. That looks like an Arshile Gorky work to me.

3. Henry O. Tanner?

4. Almost looks like a Dutch Old Master, but not quite.

5. Matisse in Morocco?

6. Looks like Venice to me. Artist is on the tip of my brain, but won't resolve into a name.

Which led to some other pics by Dufy.
Those looked closer in style, so put in sailboats.
Noticed the flags, thought why flags?, thought, so searched on regatta, et voilà!

I should have arrived at that more directly, since I saw some of his works at the Courtauld a couple years ago.
So much there that was amazing.

#4 is getting to me. I feel I've seen the painting, the place or both, but can't remember.

60. No, I'm in Seattle
I have a friend who lives in London and went to the Courtauld my last visit there.

Have you been there?
It has a gem of a collection: http://www.courtauld.ac.uk/gallery/index.shtml
It also has a nice little courtyard cafe, a serene place although it is so near the center of business.

Their website doesn't include everything that's there. There was one painting I had hoped I'd find a card or something of in the shop, but it wasn't there or on their site. Finally found a picture someone took of it and use it as a background on my desktop occasionally.

61. Hi, horseshoecrab!
Glad you got it! This one confused folks I think because of the academic gowns on the people in the painting...that and the old architecture made it look like a work by a l5th century artist. I can see how it could be misleading...

Hi CTankee.

Agreed about the confusion. I had thought the spires in the painting were England, but couldn't reconcile the academic looking gowns until the Oxford clue from Generic Other and you.

Hope that I have time to get this in. Number 6 is James McNeil Whistler. It's etching and drypoint, a completely different medium for him. My search terms on Google Images were: "Venice etching dark" and it was right up there on the list of hits. It's called Two Doorways.

Thanks, as always, for these challenges!

edited to correct Whistler etching title.
