Thanks,as always

The Christmas season is upon us.
As I was driving innocently down Hwy. 77, I noticed a lady and three small children walking on the side of the road with no homes in sight. Against my "better judgment", I stopped and asked her if she needed a ride. She and the kids piled in.

The mom said "I got kicked out of my apartment and am going to stay in a friend's apartment".She had dark circles, sunken eyes, and the look of desperation. The kids weren't much better.

We stopped by the dollar store on the way there, picking up a few groceries and a little something for the kids. The woman broke down, sobbing and humiliated. I simply told her "we're sisters, and that's what sisters do."They entered their friend's apartment. I gave them information on the few resources I had.

There are few resources for homeless families in Ellis County. The following are some resources that you may pass on to people you know who may be facing homelessness:

1. Cccs of Greater Dallas-Waxahachie
820 Ferris Ave, St. Waxahachie, TX - 75165
972-938-9672
This is a HUD Approved Housing Counseling Agency. They can refer you to other resources if you
anticipate becoming homeless.

2. Family Gateway in Dallas,Tx
http://www.familygateway.org/index.htm
Has two apartment complexes for homeless families with children. You must be a resident of Dallas County to qualify.(If you are currently bunking up at a Dallas County residence, this could help you)

3. The Genesis Women's Shelter in Dallas
http://www.genesisshelter.org/page.aspx?pid=329
Provides shelter for women and children in abusive relationships. While their address is confidential, they DO accept residents of surrounding counties. Their hotline number is 214-946-HELP (4357)

4. The Family Place in Dallas
http://www.familyplace.org/Page.aspx?pid=219
Provides assistance for women and children escaping an abusive situation. They have living facilities, classes and other help for women and children in the Greater Dallas area. Their 24-hour hotline-214-941-1991-offers crisis counseling, information and referral.

Families with children are the fastest growing homeless population in Texas.

As we prepare gifts for our kids, take a minute to think of those who may not have a roof over their heads and act in their behalf.

The one whose birthday we celebrate said the following:
"Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me"

7. We Treat The Root Causes Of Poverty
We Treat The Root Causes Of Poverty
We don’t fight poverty for the poor—we fight poverty with the poor. Our 22-year commitment to addressing the root causes of poverty, both on an individual and systemic level, combined with our unyielding commitment to stewardship (over 90 cents of each dollar goes directly to services for those in need) makes CitySquare a proven leader in our community and beyond.

8. this was a subtle response to THIS ltte written earlier in the week
(NOT By Me)

To the Editor,

I recall the Waxahachie School District having a hard time with their budget. A few things have been on my mind for a while and I would like to hear others’ opinion. I think there are some things that should be put on the ballots and let the public vote on them. With the economy like it is, everyone is aware that each must do their part. Here are some ideas they might think about for the next budget workshop.

1. Stop offering free breakfast and lunches to 67 percent of the students every day. Only offer lunches to ones that their parents have lost their jobs through no fault of their own.

2. Stop offering free daycare to mothers still in school. The children are their responsibility. They should be made to pay a small amount for this service.

3. Stop giving free shots to all students. We have Hope Clinic and the parents have all summer to get these shots.

If I sound like a heartless person, just let me remind you that the government (our tax money) sends a check to each unwed mother, gives her food stamps, helps her with low income housing, unless she is living with her parents or the father of her children.

We MUST start teaching these young people to assume responsibility for themselves and not depend on others to support them.

10. "If I sound like a heartless person..." GAK!
Oh, shit.. its not even worth trying to reply to that shit...

THIS is the mentality I deal with all the time, Beth. Yes.... I am quite familiar with people like this.

And most of them claim to be followers of God. :puke:

12. on the other side of the coin ..THIS song was on my new Xmas album
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOeugaIz2Mc

(Warning..it IS country music)

He came to town on an old freight train
He jumped off in the pouring rain
Everybody says he's insane
Just a low down account hobo

He made his bed beneath the county bridge
The town folks said that's not his
They signed a petition they're gonna get rid
Of that white trash low down no count

What if Jesus comes back like that
On an old freight train in a hobo hat
Will we let him in or turn our back
What if Jesus comes back like that
Hey what if Jesus comes back like that

Born with a habit of drug abuse
She couldn't help what her mama used
It wasn't like she got to choose
Now she's layin' there all alone

Got a monkey on her back
Nurses say they never saw a smile like that
Doctor says she might stand a chance
If somebody takes her home

What if Jesus comes back like that
Two months early and hooked on crack
Will we let him in or turn our back
What if Jesus comes back like that
Oh what if Jesus comes back like that

Nobody said life is fair
We've all got a cross to bear
When it gets a little hard to care
Just think of Jesus hanging there

He came to town on a cold dark night
A single star was his only light
The baby born that silent night
A manger for his bed

What if Jesus comes back like that
Where will he find out hearts are at
Will he let us in or turn his back
Hey what if Jesus comes back like that
Yeh what if Jesus comes back like that
Will he cry when he sees where our hearts are at
Will he let us in or turn his back
Hey what if Jesus comes back like that
Oh what if Jesus comes back like that

13. Wow-another local wrote a letter yesterday about homeless children in our county
Strictly coincidentally.I am proud of her-it's hard for the locals to speak out.

http://www.thedailylight.com/articles/2010/12/10/opinion/doc4d02ef4a603ab326720273.txt

Today I was exercising at the new no effort exercise place that was on the front page of Sunday’s newspaper. I was talking to the lady who runs the place and she was telling me about the HOMELESS in Waxahachie and how Daniel’s Den gives these people hope and helps them to have a new way of life.

I wonder how many of us know that Waxahachie has CHILDREN out here that are homeless, I did not know or realize that. Waxahachie children are homeless right here in our own town and we the public do not know about it, which sadden me so much.

I’m saying all that to say Daniel’s Den needs help! Financially they are broke, they operate on grants which have run out and are not due again until a few months away. They need help NOW to continue to help these people.

If there is anyone out there that has a empty building they could open their heart to have rent free or for a very small fee to let Daniel’s Den open a thrift store to help them get some revenue going they could use it and would be so grateful for it. But even doing this Daniel’s Den needs financial donations NOW to keep this ministry going.

People say there is no homeless in Waxahachie but folks sadly there is and Daniel’s Den is trying to make it free from homelessness. If you are thinking homeless are only drug addicts or alcoholics or even people who will not work that is not true. It is people who have come to misfortune in their lives which can and does include CHILDREN! I know finances are tight everywhere but for those of you who can and will please send something to Daniel’s Den here in Waxahachie and let’s see if we can keep these children warm, fed and off the street. Merry Christmas to All

Linda Jennings,

Waxahachie
