I whispered to a little bird…. He whispered back to me, He’d repeat exactly, “Everything you said to me…”
And so he went, And there I stayed. Waiting to hear those words, Come back to me.
A year went by, The bird returned. My heart sang with joy, Until he repeated what he’d learned.
He couldn’t find you he said, So he whispered to a seal. Surely he would pass on the message. But he only had one eye.
He told the message to the wrong bird, Who in turn told it to a whale. She’s the largest thing in the ocean! Surely SHE knows the messages recipient.
And the recipient appeared, And the whale blew and blew. But she couldn’t get close enough to shore, To share with the surfer… the message that she knew.
The message was muddled through clouds, and air. Across the salty ocean, The surfer heard the songs of a wave. A song he’d heard before somewhere…
He peeked over the crest of the next wave, Thinking surely, she’d appear. Alas, nothing… And he shed a lonely tear,
The tear floated on the surface… Back to the whale. Who in turn blew it to the sky, Picked up by a bird flying north.
And he deposited this lonely tear In front of me. And I understood your message. As clear as I could see…
What is, And can never be.
