Sentencing of former House leader DeLay put off

(Reuters) - Former Republican U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay will be able the celebrate Christmas a free man.

Senior Texas State District Judge Pat Priest on Monday put off DeLay's sentencing on money laundering and conspiracy convictions to January 10, citing scheduling conflicts. Defense attorney Dick DeGuerin requested the delay from December 20.

Under Texas law, the defendant has the right to be sentenced by the judge or by a jury. DeLay said he wants Priest, a Democrat, to pronounce his sentence. He could get anywhere from probation to life in prison.

DeLay won the nickname of 'The Hammer' for his aggressive attacks against Democrats during his time in the leadership of Republicans in Congress.

DeLay was convicted on November 24 of illegally routing some $190,000 in corporate money to Republican candidates for the Texas Legislature in 2002. The election of several Republicans that year allowed the party to seize majority control of the Texas Legislature for the first time since Reconstruction. Republicans then pushed through a controversial Congressional redistricting plan which favors Republican candidates.

should make a point of referring to "Convicted Felon Tom Delay" during our testimony. I referenced him during the redistricting hearing, but he wasn't a convicted felon then. :evilgrin:
