Despite Wealth, Nassau County Is in Fiscal Crisis
By DAVID M. HALBFINGER

MINEOLA, N.Y. — Facing a huge budget deficit when he took office in January, Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano did not impose a hiring freeze. He did not stop borrowing to subsidize some of the richest school districts in the country. He did not eliminate the Police Department’s beloved mounted unit.

Instead, Mr. Mangano, a Republican who won one of the first upsets of the Tea Party era, did what he had promised: He cut taxes, adding $40 million to the county’s deficit, which has since reached nearly $350 million.

Now, with its bonds suddenly downgraded and a state oversight agency preparing to seize its checkbook and credit cards, Nassau is on the verge of a full-fledged fiscal crisis.

That things could get so dire in this wealthy county, where property taxes are the second highest in the nation, offers a lesson in what happens when anti-tax fervor meets the realities of disappearing revenues and a punch-drunk economy. At heart, though, the situation — like state budget crises in New York, New Jersey and Illinois — illuminates the troubles long-prosperous governments, with established interest groups and residents accustomed to high levels of services, face in adapting to protracted lean times.

4. The people of Nassau County voted that clown into office.
Now, they're going to take a stiff one where the sun does not shine. Well before they are out of this farce, they would have sprinted to elect a sensible democrat to clean up the mess.

5. Next they will ask the state to bail them out
Because they just gotta' stop that big government

And them the state will ask the feds for help

And the the feds will cut the highest tax rates
because that works so well

And then the feds will cut services or give it private industry
because it is cheaper that way

6. Its all over even northern NY counties & town run by Republicans...
Edited on Sat Dec-11-10 05:40 PM by Historic NY
my town has had sole Republican rule for more than 20 yrs even when Dem's now outnumber Reps...go figure. were lucky to get 8000 people out of 30k to come out to the polls. For years they used the surplus to keep taxes down and to pay for big ticket items while ignoring others. Were in deep debt too the Republican method of throwing money at the problem doesn't work and cutting taxes when you need the revenue is unwise. Poor management but the elected officials managed to give themselves raises and life time medical benefits. the present guy ran against that and other wasteful spending until he won the election and boy has that changed. There are a few bright spots where Democrats rule. They spent the rainy day money on things that keep requiring more money, handed out sweet heart employees raises & contracts but never budgeted for the medical benefits, pension enhancements and other long term items. They spent it all away borrowing from all the accounts that should have remained untouched. So why should we be amazed we get the government we elect, fiscal responsibility that something Democrats don't do :sarcasm: or so we been told. They raise your taxes...hum seems prudent when your spending money you don't have now doesn't. Well we still can't get Democrats elected here because the same old wing dings run again and again and never win....why??? No one seems to care I suppose the old machine is long gone.

7. Mangano is many things, but he's not a teabagger...
Cutting taxes while continuing spending has been a Republican tradition in New York for decades.

8. I was born in Nassau County and spent the first five years of my life there.
I didn't realize until now that the property taxes were the second highest in the nation. But then I've spent most of the last six decades of my life in California.
