Kasich, GOP: Promise to cut money for schools, universities, social services, and Medicaid

COLUMBUS - Republicans say they'll cut Ohio's way out of a potential $8 billion budget deficit - but there's only one way to do that: by cutting money for schools, universities, prisons and social services, including Medicaid.

Why? Those services comprise more than 70 percent of state government spending.

Incoming Republican Gov. John Kasich has pledged not to raise taxes, and a receptive GOP-controlled General Assembly also signaled in a commission report this month that the budget can be balanced without tax cuts.

Kasich hasn't detailed exactly what he would cut - he isn't required to propose his first budget for three more months - but has said no program is sacred.

These cuts were implemented amid claims that they would bring prosperity to Ohio. While the reasons for Ohio’s job loss are complex, tax cuts have not helped, and ave left us unable to pay for the basics. Research shows that states with lower taxes have not grown faster than states that gather the revenue they need to do what matters."

I know that voters have an obligation to learn about a candidate's positions on major issues, but his lies about the high speed rail was beyond the pale. I can't tell you how many voters believed him when he said that he would be able to keep the money and use it for other projects in the state. He knew better than that... The man simply doesn't care about the people of Ohio.

I feel sorry for those in Ohio who really could have used the high speed rail. Unfortunately, these states that voted for Republican leaders are going to have to reap the consequences of the leadership they have elected. Maybe by 2012, they will have learned their lesson.

top income tax is 5.9%, sales taxes between 5.5%-7.75% and property tax about 1.3% of home value. The combination probably puts them about in the middle range of the states.
