When Nassau Democratic Sen. Craig Johnson lost his reelection battle two Saturdays ago - in a courtroom, by a tiny margin - it may have looked bad for Mayor Bloomberg.

After all, the mayor had endorsed Johnson for months, gave $9,500 to his campaign - and even got up before dawn to campaign with him on Long Island.

The truth is more complicated. Johnson's race was the last undecided election in the state Senate, and when he lost the GOP regained the Senate majority by a 32-30 margin.

That was a big victory for Bloomberg - because he spent almost $1 million to make it happen.
