Massive Cold Front Hitting Florida Tomorrow
I worry about our homeless population. So many of them are used to living outside here. When I was in Fort Lauderdale I would see them sleeping on bus stop benches, in parks, and underpasses.

Say a prayer or have a good wish for them.

Oh, in many ways America is broken...

1. Yeah, if the weather thus far is any indication, it's going to be a cold winter, like last year
we may even get down in the 20's again. :(

3. There Goes My Royal Poinciana Tree......Again
And "Amen" to thinking about our homeless down here. I was starting to feel sorry for the tourists shivering on our beaches and paying $200.00 a night for their rooms.

2. A massive sub-zero cold front hitting the upper midwest is even more deadly to homeless
who have no shelter.

Every warm church that believes the words of Jesus concerning the poor and the homeless should have the doors open in otherwise empty buildings to provide shelter for those in need and whose lives are at risk.

10. The homeless often migrate to the south because the weather is suppose to be warmer.
That's why our cities often open their doors to accommodate them during a freeze. Of course, in about five years, this will be gone so they'll probably be breaking into houses.

In Raleigh NC, we've already had snow. Usually, the mountains block and collect any snow fall here until after Christmas because of warmer air funnelled up from the south and the east from the coast. I expect the homeless to be facing those white flags hung outside the shelters which determine which shelters are full and which ones have room soon.

6. I can see the front coming through right now
We don't know how to handle the cold down here.

We are preparing to batten down the hatches (on a ship in Jax) as we speak.

7. For those in states where it usually have warmer weather
an now freezing cover your plants or trees with a sheet - no plastic. For the trees flood the trees so there is a pool of water, that is what we are told here and it works.

8. Jet stream map...yikes
those of course are not surface winds, but do notice how far down the loop is.
which is why we in the South will be freezing our butts off.
I live in a supposed "semi-tropical" climate.
this is our 3rd major freeze of the season.

13. was just sitting on the porch when a giant blast of cold, wet air came blowing in
had to come inside and make some soup!

Here's some local news...
http://www.cfnews13.com/article/news/2010/december/182008/Help-for-the-homeless-today-at-old-Amway-Arena

“If you are homeless and you dont have an ID, you can’t get into a shelter. So you are literally forced to sleep out on the street,” said Cathy Jackson, with the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida. “So we are giving IDs, and we also have DCF out here. So the wonder for us is we are able to issue food stamps here today.”

Orlando is a shitty place to be homeless.

14. I have spent the day
winterizing the chicken pen. My peach and mango trees are in full bloom because of the weirdly warm weather we had been having.
That being said, we are truly blessed to be warm and snug in our house.
I am hoping the homeless will make it thru the next few days ok.
