http://www.nashuatelegraph.com/opinionperspectives/902224-263/gop-offers-grand-charity-to-the-wealthy.htmlWhen I lived in London more than 30 years ago, I was surprised to
learn that the English had a charitable organization called the
Distressed Gentlefolk’s Aid Association.
Really! Founded by a respected Victorian lady, it was dedicated
to helping ladies and gentlemen of good breeding and refinement
who in their declining years had fallen on hard times.
You can imagine the distress of these gentlefolk tossed out on
the mean streets after having enjoyed a life of means. The poor
are used to doing without, but it’s a terrible inconvenience for
refined people. Besides, plenty of charities existed to help the
poor; nobody was looking after the formerly rich.
You may think that the Distressed Gentlefolk’s Aid Association
was a classic example of English eccentricity. But, in truth, it
also exists in the United States, only it has a different name.
It’s called the Republican Party.

The op-ed then goes on to discuss all the things the country
could have done with the $700 Billion we've just decided to
give to the rich and how odd it is that all those deficit hawks
in the Republican Party and their Tea Party auxiliary aren't
complaining about how we're borrowing money for this
Grand Old Provender.
