If Lieberman jumps on a Democratic platform and acts like he's turned into an activist for the cause, we should know by now, that issue has no chance of passing. It's something that he's done several times in the past. It's the reason we once believed he was a staunch Democrat. He would talk up the cause, and then it would lose on the floor. It happened over and over again back when the Repubs were in control. And then, when the Democrats had the power and it looked like we were going to win, Lieberman was right there to steer the ship away from the dock.

How many other politicians are following in his footsteps?

1. It goes on all the time. That's what the whips are for. Congressional

pay raises are one prime example. Most of them want the pay raise. The whips go around and find out how many votes they have. Some genuinely do not need or want the raise and are voting no. Some want the raise but are voting no because they are in a tight race back home, and don't want the challenger to use a yes vote against them.
The whips find that they easily have enough to pass it. In fact they can afford to have quite a few more no votes and it will still pass. They basically divy up the no votes among the members running for reelection where it will help them. You end up with a candidate bragging about voting against a pay raise, that he both wanted, and knew was going to pass.

4. Astute. Liebermann is great at "losing" on progressive issues; drops them if they gain steam.

5. actually Lieberman has one of the longest standing positive records on gay rights

of any politician. In the mid 1970's he supported an ENDA style bill for CT. The only issue he voted against gays on was DOMA. I take his support of ending DADT as sincere.

That he's ahead of most of the rest of Congress and the American people is a mark in his favor.

Lieberman is a hawk, first and foremost. Support for repeal don't ask is all about maintaining a steady stream of fodder. (and perhaps a cynical attempt to garner a few votes)
