Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) called Republicans "a bunch of gangsters" who blackmailed Democrats to ensure that the nation's wealthiest retain their tax cuts.

Nadler, appearing Sunday morning on CBS' "Face the Nation," characterized the Republican stance on the bipartisan compromise on extending the Bush-era tax cuts of "nice middle class tax cut you have there, pity if something would happen to it unless you give millionaires and billionaries" a tax cut. "Unless you give the wealthier a tax cut we're not permitting the middle class to get it."

Nadler expressed concern that Republicans will continue pressing Congress and President Obama for a permanent extension of those tax cuts and if we "succumb to blackmail" now why should there be any expectation that they will have the "political gumption in 2012 to not submit again."

"The president probably should've stood a little stronger and not gone along with the Republican blackmail attempt," Nadler said. "He thinks we can fix this in two years; I'm more skeptical of that."

7. Absolutely right -- and it's about time someone said it

The direct quote from the CBS.com link:

"The Republican block is saying, like a bunch of gangsters, 'It's a nice middle class tax cut - a pity something would happen to it! Unless you give the millionaires and billionaires a long-term tax cut, we're not going to permit the middle class to continue its tax cut.'"

...Nadler said making the cuts permanent would be the culmination of a 30-year Republican plan to "starve the beast" - "to create such massive tax cuts that we'll have to cut Social Security, Medicare, AIDS, education, housing and everything else."

In the real world, extorting money form people in exchange for not hurting them is a CRIME. And not only would we have to borrow the money to extend the cuts, WE--not they--would have to pay it back!

P.S. I'm so glad Nadler did something about his weight. I used to fear watching him because he had so much fat around his neck and face I thought he'd have a heart attack right on camera!

literally lives one block away so I see him on the street with some frequency. Although not exactly a sylph, he has lost a tremendous amount of weight, which he desperately needed to do. He moves with much greater ease now.

8. In regard to the comments at this site, they are generally 98% pro-thug no matter

what the topic is, I've noticed. During the Keith Olbermann flap, I submitted a comment & it was ignored until I wrote a second one about how unproportional the comments were. That one was published, plus one more positive view from a guy, but not my original comment which was pro-KO.

Look how out of proportion they are now, all against Nadler/Democrats.
