Something is Rotten: The Strange Case of Interpol's Red Alert on Assange, and the US Attack on WikiLeaks

- snip -

As I wrote earlier in this publication, the alleged sexual crimes that Assange is currently being sought for by a Swedish prosecutor are:

1. Allegedly failing to halt an act of consensual sexual intercourse when his sex partner and host, Anna Ardin, claims she somehow became aware that the condom he was using had “split” and,

2. Having consensual sex with a second woman a few days later without informing her that he had just been with Ardin, and then, a day later, allegedly refusing to return a phone call on his cell phone, when she tried to call him to ask him to take an STD test. (Assange says he had turned off and was not using his phone for fear he was being traced through it, not that refusing to take a call from a woman one recently slept with should be considered criminal. Cold or even cruel, maybe, but not justification for a rape charge!)

In most countries, including the US and UK, these would not pass the test to be considered a crime, much less qualify as a category of “rape," but Swedish authorities, who in all of this year have only submitted one other request to Interpol for assistance in capturing a sex crimes suspect, asked the international police agency to issue a so-called Red Alert for Assange, who was subsquently asked by police in the UK, where he was staying, to turn himself in or face arrest. (The other Interpol Red Alert sought by Swedish prosecutors this year was for Jan Christer Wallenkurtz, a 58-year-old Swedish national wanted on multiple charges of alleged sex crimes and sex crimes against children.)

The Interpol Red Alert page on Assange. Curiously, the agency couldn't find a photo to accompany the alert.

You have to ask, given that Sweden has the highest per-capital number of reported rape cases in Europe, how it can be that only these two suspects--Wallenkurtz and Assange--are brought to Interpol.

3. And what of the media coverage?
The media is parroting the lies. These are trumped up charges created to silence Assange. If the media in our nation was doing their duty as investigative agents, Assange would not have to be point man in the search for truth.

5. would be nice if he at least got the allegations right
But considering the agenda of the author I can see why he didn't. Can't have anyone looking at those allegations and having them see they're legitimate cause for charges, now can we?

6. Please show where his descriptions of the allegations are not right,
if you want everyone to see them. You are absolutely free to do that within this forum.

And then address the obvious intention of the OP: "Why Interpol only giving Red Notice on THIS case, no matter the details of the allegations?"

7. just how many times is this necessary before people will stop
closing their eyes to the actual allegations?

Fine. Here they are AGAIN:

http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2010/12/07-4
Gemma Lindfield, for the Swedish authorities, told the court Assange was wanted in connection with four allegations.

She said the first complainant, Miss A, said she was victim of "unlawful coercion" on the night of 14 August in Stockholm.

The court heard Assange is accused of using his body weight to hold her down in a sexual manner.

The second charge alleged Assange "sexually molested" Miss A by having sex with her without a condom when it was her "express wish" one should be used.

The third charge claimed Assange "deliberately molested" Miss A on 18 August "in a way designed to violate her sexual integrity".

The fourth charge accused Assange of having sex with a second woman, Miss W, on 17 August without a condom while she was asleep at her Stockholm home.

This isn't some made up shit by some author with an agenda trying to twist the actual allegations into something that's viewed as something not only not criminal but perfectly normal as well as attempting to make it appear that any criminality is the actions of the supposed victims. These are the allegations given by a member of the Swedish authorities in COURT at Westminster, Britain before a judge.

Do you have a PROBLEM with Interpol giving a red notice on ANY case with THESE allegations? Did it not occur to you that the reason that there aren't other ones is because the average person accused of such allegations don't have the means or opportunity to flee the country? That with such allegations the prosecution authority wouldn't have been so STUPID as to have let the accused go with charges still pending without bothering to talk to him knowing he'd flee the country and had the means and opportunity to do so and the press lambasted them for it? Because that's what happened. Did it also not occur to you that another reason why this is the only case Interpol gave a red notice on for THESE allegations is because normally they don't give a shit about rape allegations? You think THAT's a GOOD thing?

I don't CARE who the accused is, if the allegations show rape and other sex crimes I want the law to do what they're supposed to do instead of shoving it under the rug as if rape and other sex crimes are just too frivolous to bother with. Is it any wonder so many women who have been victims of sex crimes don't bother going to the police when the law all over the world just isn't all that concerned over such crimes and if the press should ever find out about their case they have to worry about being shit all over with every rape apology smear ever invented that they'd also have to face in court if their case even got that far?

Thank you for participating in making it that much more difficult for victims of such crimes to come forward because that's exactly what all this crap is doing. And all because the accused is someone they like. Nevermind the fact that they don't even know the guy and don't even know what happened between him and the two women. And the rape apology celebration continues.

8. I haven't closed my eyes to the technical allegations. I have read them.
And, yes, if you don't like what he wrote, you have to post them again.

By questioning the specific context here, no one is "shoving it under the rug as if rape and other sex crimes are just too frivolous to bother with." That is bullshit. So is the "problem with Interpol posting ANY case." There are real issues here of what constitutes rape and how the legal process works in Sweden, and how it may be being abused, regardless of whether Assange is guilty of anything or not.

Thank you for participating in making it that much more difficult for state-related whistleblowers to come forward without being disappeared by governments or shut up with false allegations. See how that works? I can use your same logic to attack you personally.

It is my understanding that one accuser outed herself to Aftonbladet. Apparently, the prosecutors in Sweden outed Assange to the Press against the rules. The context of public discussion changed then and there. They fucked up this case from the beginning.

And this: "Did it also not occur to you that another reason why this is the only case Interpol gave a red notice on for THESE allegations is because normally they don't give a shit about rape allegations? You think THAT's a GOOD thing?" ...won't fly, because maybe that's part of the point of the OP? You can leave me personally out of this because if you don't, it looks a lot like character assassination just because I published public information for discussion, because then your demands for people to not character assassinate seem hollow.

And the "rape apology celebration" crap, too. As I pointed out, there are real issues here. I can just as easily make the charge that you are propagating false accusations because you don't like the guy and it makes as much sense. Yes, there are ugly things being said on both sides.

I posted the first day this came out: I wasn't in the room(s). I don't know what happened. I don't know Julian Assange personally. None of that has changed.

Rape is criminal. Molestation is criminal. False accusations of rape are criminal.

9. tell yourself that
"I posted the first day this came out: I wasn't in the room(s). I don't know what happened. I don't know Julian Assange personally. None of that has changed."

I'll believe that when you stop promoting crap articles that try to gloss over what the allegations are and stop participating in the spread of smearing the alleged victims and stop pretending you know the motivations of anyone involved and assuming they must be nefarious. And it STILL isn't yours or anyone else's place to determine what happened and who may or may not be guilty of whatever, so what's your point in posting the OP or any of your other posts on the matter?

You actually believe there hasn't been a rape apology celebration going on? Where the hell have you been?

I don't believe you. At ALL.

11. Look, the CIA needed his ass 'brought in' and probably never guessed
he would surrender under such weak circumstantial evidence. Now they have to figure out what to do with him. I'm sure Sweden just wants to be rid of him.
