Intimidation of WikiLeaks an attack on democracy
WIKILEAKS has come under massive attack and a campaign of intimidation by government and corporate bodies, although it is not guilty of hacking and is merely publishing information provided by a whistleblower. It has partnered with the world’s leading newspapers (New York Times, Guardian, Spiegel etc) to review and vet the information it publishes.
The fact that of the 250,000 US diplomatic cables, it has only published 800 so far, is ample proof of the responsible manner in which it vets information. Past WikiLeaks publications have exposed government-backed torture, the killing of innocent civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan, and corporate corruption.
Legal experts say WikiLeaks has likely broken no law. Yet top US politicians have called it a terrorist group and commentators have urged assassination of its staff.
The intimidation of WikiLeaks is an attack on democracy. It is a shame that countries that loudly champion and preach freedom of speech, press and information, now that their double standards have been exposed to the world, are now clamouring for the messenger to be destroyed. There is an urgent need for an expression of outrage at this blatant and vicious attack on the freedom of the press and information.
