Pakistan Institute of National Affairs (PINA): Julian Assange should be awarded the Nobel Prize

‘Julian Assange should be awarded Nobel Prize’
Lahore, Pakistan
December 13, 2010

The speakers at a seminar on ìPost WikiLeaks Pakistanî have said that Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, should be awarded Nobel Prize for being the most courageous person to unveil the truth.

The seminar was organised by the Pakistan Institute of National Affairs (PINA) where the participants were unanimous that Muslim ruling elite stood exposed after WikiLeaks revelations, saying there was need to develop inter-state relations and brotherhood among the Muslim countries.

PINA Secretary General Altaf Hasan Qureshi welcomed WikiLeaks as the revolution of light which needed a serious and deliberate analysis of Pakistanís future. He said the disclosures had shaken the major powers which would have to adjust themselves to the changing geo-political realities.

He said WikiLeaks would lead to greater transparency in inter-state diplomacy and governance. In view of the great contribution of Julian Assange, he was a strong candidate for the Nobel Prize and many countries were queuing up to support him.

1. From Malaysia: Intimidation of WikiLeaks an attack on democracy

Letter to the Editor
December 13, 2010

Intimidation of WikiLeaks an attack on democracy

WIKILEAKS has come under massive attack and a campaign of intimidation by government and corporate bodies, although it is not guilty of hacking and is merely publishing information provided by a whistleblower. It has partnered with the world’s leading newspapers (New York Times, Guardian, Spiegel etc) to review and vet the information it publishes.

The fact that of the 250,000 US diplomatic cables, it has only published 800 so far, is ample proof of the responsible manner in which it vets information. Past WikiLeaks publications have exposed government-backed torture, the killing of innocent civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan, and corporate corruption.

Legal experts say WikiLeaks has likely broken no law. Yet top US politicians have called it a terrorist group and commentators have urged assassination of its staff.

The intimidation of WikiLeaks is an attack on democracy. It is a shame that countries that loudly champion and preach freedom of speech, press and information, now that their double standards have been exposed to the world, are now clamouring for the messenger to be destroyed. There is an urgent need for an expression of outrage at this blatant and vicious attack on the freedom of the press and information.

2. I agree, there IS an urgent need for an expression of outrage
at these attacks on a news organization and on the Free Press. Where are our journalists? Why are they not speaking out and condemning these attacks?

A rhetorical question, I think they are afraid. And watching what is happening to Julian Assange, they have good reason to be.
