Colleges urged to market research
l

Gov.-elect John Kasich wants Ohio universities to do a better job of turning research into commercial products to spur economic growth and create badly needed jobs in the state.

"Sticking research papers in a drawer and discovering them 50years later doesn't advance Ohio," Kasich said last week.

2. Which means that things like my thesis
will never be authorized. I mean there is no commercial use for a Mexican Friar who helped to lay the basis of Independence. I mean that is revolt and shit...

There are days I wonder if we have started the sly down to a new dark ages.

3. What's wrong with that? Do you realize that your universities
employ many engineering professors who are inventing and designing products and techniques that could be jointly developed with industry for the benefit of both? Many states already do this.

4. Yes, and they (the engineering profs) sign away all rights to their discoveries
Edited on Sun Dec-12-10 09:58 PM by Dogmudgeon
Only a very few schools -- mainly in the Ivy League -- give the discoverers a cut. Typically, the school sells the rights for pennies on the dollar. This allows the research to be hidden for 17 years, as often as not.

Between the Downloading Police, patent trolls, and the use of IP as monetized fungible assets, "Intellectual Property" is an oxymoron now.

--d!
Edited for a spelling mistake. Which I have Trademarked, Patented, and otherwise Encumbered.

7. Not in my state they don't. The professors at U.W.
do indeed get a cut, if a profit is made from an invention. Their names are on the patents and they get a cut.

9. He and Scotty Walker in Wisconsin
have nearly identical press releases and issues, beginning with ditching rail projects and going after state workers. The same playbook. Probably written by Rove. It is boilerplate - Scooter also has made the "research into markets" issue a part of his agenda.

11. Every research university already does this.
They have full time staff that identify "intellectual property" (research) that can be marketed. They file patent applications, look for investors, and generally facilitate turning ideas into money. The university gets a share, and the researchers get a share. A lot of computer and biomed companies you have heard of started this way.

Ohio State is huge, and there is no way they aren't already doing this. If he thinks there is some secret pile of moneymaking research sitting in a drawer somewhere in Columbus, he's dreaming.
