Beware of Sugary Drinks from McDonald’s and Burger King

Don’t bother inquiring about the sugar content of sodas at fast-food chains like McDonald’s and Burger King, because whatever the companies claim, the numbers may be wrong. This fact has been demonstrated by researchers at the University of Southern California examining the fructose levels of many popular sodas, including the Coke and Sprite served by McDonald’s and Burger King.

Independent laboratory testing found McDonald’s Coke had nearly 30% more sugar than what the nutrition label says. The chain’s Sprite was about 25% higher in sugar, while Burger King’s Sprite was a little over 20% and its Coke around 18% more.

Some of the products tested, such as Dr. Pepper and Mountain Dew, actually had less sugar than advertised.

1. Isn't that something that is regulated by Coca Cola or the local supplier?
I would think that the sugar content is contained in the syrup delivered to the restaurant and the mixture setup is done by a trained technician and not by Bugger King or McD's.

4. The mixing of the syrup with the soda is done by a valve...
...that is serviced about once a decade by the vendor, and in the meantime is bumped, prodded, jolted, and covered in grease and muck by the employees.

5. The syrup comes in a box (much like box wine) and is screwed on to a hose that
feeds it into the machine. It is mixed with the soda water when the user activates the nozzle. I guess how much water a cup of syrup gets would depend on how the water dispensing machine is calibrated.
