Big push coming up from the RW is to destroy Public Unions
Wall Street Journal has a couple of editorials on the subject today. They will use pensions and health care costs as a wedge issue. And I don't see much support for Unions coming from the present dem leadership, so it is going to be a hard battle.

see:
Government Unions vs. Taxpayers
The moral case for unions—protecting working families from exploitation—does not apply to public employment.
By TIM PAWLENTY

When Americans think of organized labor, they might think of images like I saw growing up in a blue-collar meatpacking town: hard hats, work boots, tough conditions and gritty jobs. While I didn't work in the slaughterhouses, I did become a union member when I worked at a grocery store to help put myself through school. I was grateful for the paycheck and proud of the work I did.

The rise of the labor movement in the early 20th century was a triumph for America's working class. In an era of deep economic anxiety, unions stood up for hard-working but vulnerable families, protecting them from physical and economic exploitation.

Much has changed. The majority of union members today no longer work in construction, manufacturing or "strong back" jobs. They work for government, which, thanks to President Obama, has become the only booming "industry" left in our economy. Since January 2008 the private sector has lost nearly eight million jobs while local, state and federal governments added 590,000.

Federal employees receive an average of $123,049 annually in pay and benefits, twice the average of the private sector. And across the country, at every level of government, the pattern is the same: Unionized public employees are making more money, receiving more generous benefits, and enjoying greater job security than the working families forced to pay for it with ever-higher taxes, deficits and debt.

Wisconsin's next governor takes on public collective bargaining.

Wisconsin Governor-elect Scott Walker has laid out an ambitious agenda, such as turning the department of commerce into a public-private partnership and lifting the cap on school vouchers. But his boldest idea may be rescinding the right of government employees to collectively bargain.

Mr. Walker floated the idea last week in response to union opposition to his modest proposal to require employees to contribute 5% of their pay to their pensions and to increase their health-care contributions to 12% from as low as 4% today.

2. Part Of The Defecit Trap...
No sooner will this administration sell out for tax breaks that aren't needed nor we can afford along with a "payroll tax" holiday that will mean paying current beneficiaries out of somewhere (not sure) and then replenish that amount in the future (don't hold your breath)...sending the crushing defecit even higher and meaning this country will borrow more on the open markets that will mean even greater expenses when you take interest into account. And all because this administration is scared of being labeled as "tax and spend"...so they're spend but not bother to tax.

Ultimately...(meaning as soon as the deal is done) the GOTB will amp up their "defecit spending" bullshit. Be assured this is how they plan to box Obama in throughout the next two years and the corporate media will gladly dance along. The "only" way to cut the defecit is to destroy the social safety nets and those who attempt to protect them...the unions. Pay no attention to the wars for profit that suck more in a day than extention of UE benefits would use in 6 months. But the MIC is sacroscant...thus the only way to cut will be from the poorest and the least able to speak for themselves. And those that attempt to speak for those groups will be labeled as "unpatriotic"...even by Democrats.

4. Unions may not even exist in another decade.
Big business controls the process and parties lock, stock, and barrel.

5. Lower taxes for the few and
lower wages for the many.
Looks like unions are more important than ever. No problem with organization based on promoting the welfare of the super rich like the National Chamber of Commerce.

6. So therefore, working for the government means you get to be exploited.
Unless you're a congresscritter, that is, then you deserve all of the benefits right away.
