What a wild idea.
I've been searching for a swift that I can afford for some time now and been coming up empty. While a ball winder would be nice, it isn't as important to me as the swift. Then today I ran into this:

Scroll down for pictures. I'm sending my husband out for Tinker Toys tomorrow.

1. Takes me back to the days of buying Germantown hanks of wool yarn
My grandmother would help and we could chat while winding yarn. Or I used to used the back of a ladder back kitchen chair. But you have to stand over it and work the yarn.

This looks like a great way to make a swift. I'm not sure how they anchor down. I guess a clamping device is involved.

3. That's ingenious!
Considering the obscene prices on tools nowadays it's worth the price! I have both swifter and winder, purchased 20+ years ago, and when I was looking to see what they are now -- holy schnikes!

4. I just realized that if I buy a double set
I'll not only have a swift when I need it, but I'll be able to assemble a blocking frame for my lace knits.

Why can I never think of such great ideas?

5. You're not alone -- I see tinker toys and I go nuts after years of
stabbing and stomping on them when son was little. I still have scars.
All I ever wanted to do with them was BURN them.
