Question for knitters

I just recently started knitting. I found some variety pack needles on clearance and decided to give it a go. I really really enjoy it! So, I asked for a variety pack of dpns for Christmas. Instead, I got the Boye interchangeable kit. I've never used circular needles before, and I really don't mind the aluminum since I crochet with aluminum hooks. My question is this: Should I keep the kit or exchange it? I crochet more than anything and I only wanted the dpns to try making some socks. Any input is greatly appreciated.

1. Unless you're positive you'll never use them I would keep them

After all, say six months from now you decide to try some new knit pattern and realize you should have kept those needles? It gets expensive to buy new kneedles all the time and you can use the circular needles just like straight ones.

I guess I should just get off my tail and try them out! I bought some beautiful Moonlight Mohair on sale at JoAnn's that I'm dying to use.

I also saw a good video tutorial for the magic loop technique that looks like it requires far less dexterity than dpns. Maybe I'll try some socks like that first.

3. Who knows, you might get really inspired!

Most people will use circs if they are knitting something really large, like an afghan or a shawl. You treat the circs just like a regular needle and turn them the same way you would a straight needle, you're just not knitting "in the round."

I'd hang on to them, you just never know when you might need them!

I only use Circs, except where a DPN is totally required, but I'm also planning on teaching myself magic loop one of these days, so I can banish DPNs to the hell they belong in.

I even do socks on Circs. 2 of them, in fact. I adore them. I haven't used a straight needle in years, other than DPNs. Probably not since the 1990s.

I'm so glad that I asked because I might have taken them back and then been irritated that I did afterward.

You've got the option to knit on 'straight' needles too....just use those little 'buttons' at the end of a circular piece...of course, you'd do this twice.

9. Keep the Boye set!

because you can knit back and forth on circular needles in tight spaces. In addition, being able to extend those circular needles is incredibly useful for large projects like Afghans and Faroese shawls.

I use my Boye needles exclusively unless I'm knitting socks or other small projects in the round.

DP needles are cheaper than dirt. Just buy a set when you've got a specific project to do with them.
