Pics from my old hobby - dialup warning!
nadinbrzezinski's post inspired me to dig up some photos of an old hobby - painting 25mm figures for wargames. People would make huge armies of these guys and engage them in battles using very complex rules with lots of dice.

The figures shown here are all about 1 1/2 inches tall, or similar to HO model railroad scale.

I gave up the hobby about 10 years ago due to lack of players in my area, and sold all of the figures on ebay. But I was able to use many of the techniques learned in painting ceramics such as mini Christmas villages.

These are all from a game called Warhammer 40K. The basic premise was fantasy races in a high tech setting. I had an army made up mostly of Elves.

Elven scouts

"Banshees", female close combat fighters

"Hawks",

"Harlequins", another close combat specialist

A "dreadnaught", a large robot, he was about 5 inches high

and the leader of this army, he sold for about $90, IIRC.

5. They are molded with a lot of detail
so its a matter of learning lots of 'tricks' for making that 3D detal work for you. Like using colored inks to make low spots appear dark and shadowy, and dry brushing to make high spots appear light or reflective. Painting brightly colored areas white first, then a thin coat of the color, is brighter than just that color by itself. Putting a thin black line between parts with different colors makes them 'pop' as your eye can delineate the difference better.

I've been able to use a lot of these techniques in painting ceramic figures, like the houses my wife makes into little villages every winter above the fireplace.

4. These are just amazing

....I'm able to do many fabric/fiber crafts. I cannot paint, not at all, not a little bit.....it's a bit embarrassing as my great-grandfather was a somewhat famous artist and my uncle could be if he would just sell his paintings.

I really admire what you are able to create. The time, the patience and of course, the talent for painting these figures.

Thanks for sharing.....cheers
