2. I am self taught but I have to say I studied art at Pratt Institute,Brooklyn N.Y.

did textile design for many years. I always liked working with wood. I started as a hobby and now I sell in Miniature Shows though an agent. You can see my work at Lilliputland. 5. How long does it take you to make one of those secretaries?

6. In answer to how long it takes to make a secretary

Usually from two and a half to three weeks, thats working just about every day. I start with a reference piece from a book or Antique Magazine.Proportion and size is an important first step. My biggest help comes from a copier that reduces and enlarges, prior to having this I did it by drawing on graph paper using the full size measurements and taking it down to 1/12th. Cutting the wood and gluing is next, after that its using a sealer, then base coating with a spray paint.( I make the piece in sections to be put together when the painting and finishing is completed.)Painting comes next. I use a water based paint for detail but this requires a lacquer finish. Many coats are applied before the piece is ready to be put together and hardware for drawers and doors applied. This is the dangerous part as anything can go wrong and then has to be repaired, knowing how to repair is as important as knowing how to make a piece. Everything is done with a small 2 1/2 inch blade table saw. a dremel scroll saw and several dremel hand tools with attachments. I use Midwest cherry wood. Midwest makes various thicknesses from 1/32nd to 1/4.There are times when I think I must be crazy to do this, it is not easy. You have to really want to be a miniaturist to get into this. There are many very talented people doing all sorts of different things. I am always amazed when I go to a show.
