Obama Admin to Announce New National HIV/AIDS Communication, Apr. 7

WASHINGTON – White House officials will team up with the Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to unveil a new national communication campaign on HIV/AIDS today at 1:00 PM. This marks the first federally funded national domestic HIV/AIDS communications campaign in over a decade. The Obama Administration will join with CDC, leading civil rights and HIV/AIDS groups and officials from the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation to announce the first phase of the $45 million campaign. The event will be streamed live on www.AIDS.gov.

Once the announcement is made, CDC will send out a Dear Colleague Letter that provides additional information about the campaign and how you can get more information about it. Tuesday, April 7, 2009

I have some exciting news to share with you.

We received word late Thursday that the White House was interested in supporting CDC's HIV prevention efforts by announcing our new HIV/AIDS prevention campaign, Act Against AIDS. White House officials will team up with the Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to announce this new national communication campaign on HIV/AIDS Tuesday April 7th at 1:00 PM. This marks the first federally funded national domestic HIV/AIDS campaign in almost twenty years. The Obama Administration will join with leading civil rights and HIV/AIDS groups and officials from the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation to announce the first phase of the $45 million campaign that will focus on refocusing the American public on the continued impact of the epidemic here at home.

If all goes as planned, the event will be webcast live at 1pm tomorrow at www.aids.gov. If there is a technical glitch, the event will be recorded and posted on the website at that time.

At 1:00 pm additional information about the Act Against AIDS campaign will go live on the CDC Web site at www.cdc.gov/hiv .

At that time, we will also launch a Web site for consumers and prevention partners at www.NineAndaHalfMinutes.org. This website will contain Web-based tools that health departments can use as part of their on-line and community-based prevention efforts.

Tomorrow morning, a Dear Colleague Letter will be sent to you and to our partners. I regret that we cannot share it with you today, but we have been asked not to share specific details until the day of the official announcement.
