Someone expressed interest in my $4.99 Operator's Manual Canister from a tractor, which I mounted to the bike as a tool carrier.

Picked up a small piece of metal, drilled and tapped holes in it, and mounted the whole thing inside my luggage frame, so I can still mount my big metal side cans when I need the space. In the meantime, I've got tools on day rides without thinking about it:





Holds my tool roll, spare screw/nut canister, and my own vital addition: channel locks. Maybe it's the plumber in me, but it's my "luxury" tool for the road:



In the lid, I keep a coiled up piece of tubing for siphoning and what-not:

1. A good use of space

That right-side luggage rack is far away from the frame, I guess to match the left-side clearance needed for the muffler. Your installation is a good use of that "wasted" space. My luggage racks are too close to the frame/wheel to have any usable space.

What's interesting is that the right-side rack isn't as far away from the frame (not quite) as the side with the exhaust pipe. When the "cans" are on, they even it out -- the left-side pannier is slightly more narrow.

3. That's a great idea

I like how accessible the tools are.

I have a Mustang saddle on my Roadie, which I love, but it's a real pain to get to the tools. They are under the seat. The rider/passenger saddle are one piece, and mount with the same bolt that secures the forward part of the luggage rack, so it's a major production to get to the tool kit.

I gave up and started carrying the tools in a little tail pack or in my T-bag for long trips.
