Looks Like A Nice Ride Coming This Weekend
I shot an E-Mail to an old friend who I haven't seen in a while yesterday inviting him to a brain picking session - with lunch, at my expense. I wanted to ask him about a trip he took to and through the southern coal fields a while back. As it turns out he has a state-wide trip goal of his own and was going for a 3-day ride this coming weekend. He is in the process of visiting the county seat of each of the state's 55 counties. He parks his bike (BMW) within camera range of the court house, snaps the picture and then goes on his way. Sounded like a plan to me.

We're going to be meeting up first thing friday morning and heading south to the middle of the state then take a right toward the Ohio River. Somewhere before Parkersburg he has found some roads that drop down to the south, sweep around toward Kentucky, and then come back through the lands of mountain-top-removal. I've never been down there but I've been wanting to see it for myself for a long time. Looking forward to this one.

1. I'm so jealous
Me: Painting the house on Saturday and Sunday looks to be a washout :(

On another note, is there a good web site with Mapquest-like maps of good touring roads (non-highway) for each state?

I really want to plan a trip for the fall :hi:

2. The State Atlas and Gazetteer I'm using is by DeLorme
They advertise in the back that they have them for every state. The book is very good. Each page is a segment of a state wide geodedic survey map. Every road, paved or not, is on there as are elevations and points of interest. I take it with me everywhere I ride. For West Virginia its 64 pages, each page 11" x 15.5". Very good maps.
